Yesterday, a magnitude 6.2 struck 52 km ENE of Calama, Chile. Later, a second earthquake, magnitude 6.1 struck 30 km WNW of Tocopilla, Chile which was west of the first earthquake. The second quake that struck along the coastal area seemed to be felt more strongly despite the first one being larger. The second 6.1 magnitude occurred at a shallower focal depth - 44 km while the earlier quake further inland was around 97 km deep. Note that earthquakes occurring further into the continent or thicker side on a convergent plate boundary are usually rather deep. There have been no reports of significant damage or injuries from these events. Meanwhile, 5 people have been confirmed dead and 130 injured following the magnitude 7.1 in northern Philippines. Again, this may not be over yet. There still could be some more significant earthquake activity going on in the world. Less than an hour ago, a magnitude 5.2 struck 45 km SW of Jiquilillo, Nicaragua. So far, other regions that have been more active over the last 24 hours are: Central America, northern Chile, the Fiji Islands region, and the southern Kamchatka peninsula and northern Kuril Islands(Russia).
