EQ WATCH: Aug. 31 - Sept. 8, 2020

There is now a strong chance of more mag. 6+ worldwide anytime or day now within the next week. It may or may not act up today, but within the week ahead, more large earthquakes are likely. Regions to watch out for would include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, the Banda Sea region), New Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands region, Tonga, Vanuatu, New Zealand(North Island), Balleny Islands region, Myanmar, Afghanistan or Pakistan, Iran, Greece, Northern Mariana Islands, Japan, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Peru, Chile, Central America.. At the same time, it may be a couple of more days before more significant earthquake activity takes place in the world. There is a very high chance more serious activity could take place any time now or sometime within the next 5-7 days. There may also be more activity increasing once more in Southern California as well as other parts of the state.

Aug. 28-29, 2020

It has been rather quiet in the world in terms of significant earthquake activity. It could remain quiet all weekend at this point. However, it could still jump back up any time now somewhere. There may likely be another round of strong earthquakes by September 6-8. While it is remaining relatively low in activity in the world, there is that potential for something serious taking place somewhere. A magnitude 7+ quake somewhere before this month is over is not out of the realm of possibility at this point. I have drawn my attention more towards the Mediterranean Sea region and Central Asia(Pakistan or Afghanistan region). However, there still may not be much going on out there for now. There has been very little going on in Southern California today. I did a 180 just minutes ago and issued an alert, but took it back after discovering that the mag. 5.1 in the Greece/Albania region has been downgraded to mag. 4.5. I'm being very cautious at this point. The activity in Southern California could rise again anytime now or by tomorrow. At the same time, it could remain low all weekend.

Aug. 25, 2020

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the West coast of Costa Rica on Monday. There were no initial reports of damage. The quake hit at a depth of 17 miles, close to the city of Jaco, according to the USGS. It was reported that the earthquake rattled buildings in the capital of San Jose which was about 41 miles away from the epicenter. There still may be more significant earthquake activity occurring in the world anytime today or this week. However, it may become very quiet for now. There may also be more seismic activity increasing in Southern California as well as other parts of California today or later this week.

Outlook: August 2020

Usually in the latter part of every month, I make a post detailing the potential outlook in terms of earthquakes worldwide and local. Yesterday, I made a post, but deleted it because I rushed through it and did not thoroughly process everything. At this point, more significant activity may start heating up by tomorrow in parts. There could also be little going on out there for now. There is still a high change for more mag. 6+ worldwide within the week ahead. Areas to watch include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea region), Mohean-India region(Andaman Islands), Central Asia(Hindu Kush region or Xizang-China), East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Aleutian Islands and/or Southern Alaska... It has been extremely quiet all day in Southern California. The number of quakes over the last day has dropped all the way down to 19(area between the Tehachapi Mountains and the Mexico border). There has been some more activity heating up in Baja California, just South of the border. At this point, it could remain very quiet for the rest of the day or possibly into tomorrow. However, a lot more could take place any day now. More mag. 4+ within the next week or two is of a very high chance. There could also be more taking place with the Ridgecrest sequence. There may be more mag. 3+ in other parts of California and/or Nevada anytime or day now. I will be providing updates via Twitter if more changes occur.

Update: August 19, 2020

Yesterday, a pair of large earthquakes occurred off the coast of Southern Sumatra, Indonesia. They were of mag. 6.8 and mag. 6.9(the 6.8 being the foreshock). There were no reports of a tsunami and no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. The magnitude 6.8 occurred 80 miles off the coast of Sumatra at 5:23 A.M. local time. The magnitude 6.9 occurred in the same location only 6 minutes later. Frightened residents fled from their homes and into the streets in the city of Bengkulu, closest to the epicenter. After those events there has not been much else going on in the world. That may or may not be it for now. There is more activity rising here in Southern California again so far. There has also been  more activity heating up in  other parts of the state. I usually share the link to my Twitter account to provide updates for if and when more changes.

Update: August 18, 2020

A magnitude 6.6 occurred in the Samar Sea of the Philippines yesterday. At least one person has died and dozens of others have been injured. The quake damaged numerous homes, bridges, and buildings, including 2 coronavirus quarantine centers. The victim was a retired police officer. His death was a result of getting pinned under the debris of a three-story house that collapsed in the coastal town of Cataingan according to authorities. Rescuers were trying to find members of his family who were still missing late Tuesday. The earthquake hit just after midnight local time. It was centered around 3 miles from Cataingan with a focal depth of 13 miles. More than 40 people were said to be injured and about 100 others who were undergoing coronavirus quarantine were forced to evacuate two damaged government buildings, officials said. There has not been much else going on elsewhere in the world. However, there is still a high potential for more significant activity somewhere. At the same time, there may be hardly anything else going on out there for now. Other places of possible concern include: Bonin Islands(Japan), Indonesia(Java, Banda Sea, Flores Sea, or Molucca Sea), Central Asia(Hindu Kush region, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Xizang-China), Aleutian Islands(Alaska), Central America, Greece or the Eastern Mediterranean region, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Kermadec Islands, Chile, Peru.. There has been some steady burning activity in Southern California so far. More magnitude 3+ anytime within the next several days might be on the rise. There may also be more going on in other parts of California.

August 16-22, 2020

Some more signs of significant earthquake activity occurred later yesterday, but there has still not been much else going on after that. It may or may not act up today. However, the chances of more strong earthquakes in the world have risen again. Within the next 5-7 days, a magnitude 6 or greater is likely somewhere. It could happen today or it may be another day or two before more significant activity occurs in the world. Regions to look out for include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea, or Molucca Sea region), Philippines(Mindanao or the Batan and Babuyan Islands region), Central Asia(Tajikistan, Hindu Kush region, Pakistan, or Xizang-China), Argentina, Chile, Peru, Tonga, Kermadec Islands region, The Eastern Mediterranean(Greece or Turkey), Aleutian Islands or Southern Alaska.. More started heating up again with the Ridgecrest Sequence last night and this morning. Some more activity has occurred in the area South of that late last night as well. There may be more to come within the coming days.

Update: August 14, 2020

Some more moderate earthquakes have occurred in the world over the past day, but there is still overall little taking place. I stated on Twitter that there may not be any significant earthquakes anywhere until next week, although I also indicated that it could change at any time. That was why I stretched the watch all the way to the 20th - 8 days in advance. I had a feeling there would be little going on in the world for a while because there was recently a lot taking place out there before that. There was a magnitude 6 somewhere only 2 days ago. There was some strong interplate earthquake activity going on only about a week ago. However, it still could become active again anytime or day now. A magnitude 7+ quake striking somewhere this weekend is not out of the realm of possibility, but at this point, it may be overall dead quiet out there for now. There may be more mag. 4s and 5s in certain active areas, but there may not be anything large going on anywhere today. It could still change later on. It could be later this afternoon or perhaps 3 hours from now, but as far as I know, it does not look like it is acting up much out there. Closer to home, a magnitude 3.1 occurred near the Salton Sea during the overnight hours. It then suddenly became dead quiet here after that. There was literally nothing for 5 hours and the count had dropped below 30 EQs over the last 24 hours. However, there may just now be some more activity warming up again. A couple of tiny red circles just appeared on the monitor.

New EQ Watch: Aug. 12-20, 2020

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred off the coast of Tanzania earlier today, one of the less likely regions to have an earthquake. There now may be more strong earthquake activity occurring elsewhere worldwide any time now or within the week ahead at this point so far. Regions to watch out for would include: Pakistan, Iran, Xizang-China or Northern India, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea or Molucca Sea), East Timor, Philippines(Batan or Babuyan Islands), Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Tonga, Kermadec Islands, Japan, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula... It was fairly quiet earlier, but there are now more signs of more strong to potentially major earthquake activity somewhere in the world so far. There may also still be more activity heating up in Southern California. There could also potentially be something going on around the coast of British Columbia or Southern Alaska.

August 11, 2020

I know I change it a lot, but I finally figured how to make this system simpler. My avatar on Twitter has a background that is green that switches to red with one exclamation point whenever the potential for more strong earthquake activity in the world is heightened or whenever there is some more activity taking place in Southern California(mag. 3+). I will use the red highlighted avatar with 2 exclamation points whenever there is or may be more mag. 4+ taking place in Southern California. As far as more large earthquake activity in the world is concerned, there has been little going on out there. There was recently a lot of significant activity the previous week and now, it is resting. However, there could be something significant going on somewhere again later this week or it could remain very quiet out there all week. The swarm in the Salton Sea area has started declining fast this morning. There still may be more to come later, but right now, there is not much else interesting going on anywhere. I may provide an update later on what might be going on. As of right now, it is overall extremely quiet out there in the world and the activity in Southern California has started decreasing. I will stick with this system where it will not be so confusing. Just making it redder is the way to go.

Update: August 7, 2020

So far, more significant earthquake activity has continued in parts of the world. A magnitude 6.4 occurred in the Prince Edward Islands region(Southwest Indian Ridge; by the John Harrison Ridge) around 16 hours ago. A magnitude 4.9 struck Northern Algeria 9 hours ago. There have been reports of damage. That region did not seem to fare very well in an earthquake of that size. People in that area should be cautious in case of a larger event. The quake already has their attention over there. There still could be more serious earthquake activity out there in the world. At the same time, there may not be much else going on for now. However, the threat may also still not be over yet. There is even a possibility for a magnitude 7+ somewhere. It also might not happen, but it does stand of a higher potential somewhere. Regions to watch out for in terms of significant activity include: parts of Indonesia, Banda Sea, Molucca Sea region, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Bismarck Sea region, Loyalty Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Japan(Honshu or Hokkaido), Kamchatka Peninsula, Komandoeskiye Ostrova region, Iran, Peru, parts of the Caribbean Sea region such as Puerto Rico.. There has been some more seismic activity warming up again in Southern California once more. There could be more going on here this weekend or next week.

Update: August 5, 2020

A magnitude 6.4 aftershock occurred in the Vanuatu Islands region nearly 8 hours ago. The second largest quake over the last day was a magnitude 5.5 near Palau Sumba, Indonesia. There still may be more strong earthquakes on the rise in the world. There is even the possibility of a magnitude 7 or greater somewhere anytime or day now. The potential candidates for the next large earthquake would include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, the Flores, Molucca, or Banda Sea region), Papua New Guinea, East Timor, Central Asia(Xizang China or the Hindu Kush region), Japan, Northern Mariana Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, Kermadec Islands, Peru, Aleutian Islands, Central America(Guatemala region)...
Closer to home, a magnitude 2.6 occurred near Rancho Cucamonga in Southern California at 10:00 last night. The seismic activity may have died down afterwards into this morning, but there is just now more signs of it increasing again. There has also been more seismic activity occurring in other parts of the United States including Utah, Texas, Oklahoma, and even Missouri where the New Madrid Seismic Zone is.

Tuesday, August 4, 2020

August 4, 2020

There may be more magnitude 6 or greater taking place somewhere in the world any time now. A magnitude 5.6 just occurred in the Vanuatu region. Other regions of potential concern include: the Solomon and Santa Cruz Islands, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Balleny Islands region, Indonesia(Sulawesi, Flores, Banda Sea region, Java, or Sumatra), Philippines(Mindanao or Batan Islands), Ryukyu Islands(Japan), Northern Mariana Islands, Aleutian Islands(Alaska), Hindu Kush region or Xizang region(China), Turkey, Central America, Peru..
There has been more seismic activity continuing to heat up in Southern California this morning so far. More mag. 3 or greater any time or day now remains of a very high potential. There may also be more activity increasing in other parts of California such as near Ridgecrest and the Mammoth Lakes area. Again, there is a very high potential of more magnitude 6 or greater earthquakes out there in the world any moment or any time within the next several days at this point.

Update: August 1, 2020

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred in the Mindanao region of the Philippines. The epicenter was just Northwest of the coastal city of Cotabato. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The Philippines' volcanology agency said it was expecting damage and aftershocks, but no threat of a tsunami. Then later, there was a magnitude 6.0 in the Bismarck Sea near Papua New Guinea. There is still a very high potential for more large and potentially dangerous earthquake activity somewhere in the world.
Regions that could be of concern include: Central Asia(China - Xizang, Sichuan, or Yunnan, Northern India, Afghanistan, or Pakistan), Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Chile, Central America(Mexico)...
At the same time, that could also be it for now. There is not so much going on in Southern California today so far. It could still heat up again later or it could remain relatively quiet here all day. There is due to be more going on as well as other parts of California such as Central California, Mammoth, and the Ridgecrest area.
