Special Update: 7/29/22

I have to make this post A.S.A.P. in case something really serious is going on. There happens to be a swarm of earthquakes taking place in the Izu Islands region, South of the Bando Basin, off the southeastern coast of Japan. The Northern Izu-Ogasawara Trench appears to be growing active as we speak. It is a convergent boundary, so it is capable of producing a major tsunami-genic earthquake. I'm not saying that is going to happen. It is just an area to watch. If a massive earthquake does strike, there will be more time for people to evacuate the shores of Japan proper. This does not mean to sit there and wait until you see signs of the waves approaching. These waves travel extremely fast. I'm sure that people there are very good about exercising precaution and taking immediate appropriate action in case of an emergency, especially after the March 2011 disaster. It also could still be active somewhere else in the world as well. There has been more activity taking place north of Hokkaido and in the Kuril Islands region. There was also a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in the border region of Russia and Mongolia earlier.

Report: 7/28/22

Yesterday, a magnitude 6.2 struck 52 km ENE of Calama, Chile. Later, a second earthquake, magnitude 6.1 struck 30 km WNW of Tocopilla, Chile which was west of the first earthquake. The second quake that struck along the coastal area seemed to be felt more strongly despite the first one being larger. The second 6.1 magnitude occurred at a shallower focal depth - 44 km while the earlier quake further inland was around 97 km deep. Note that earthquakes occurring further into the continent or thicker side on a convergent plate boundary are usually rather deep. There have been no reports of significant damage or injuries from these events. Meanwhile, 5 people have been confirmed dead and 130 injured following the magnitude 7.1 in northern Philippines. Again, this may not be over yet. There still could be some more significant earthquake activity going on in the world. Less than an hour ago, a magnitude 5.2 struck 45 km SW of Jiquilillo, Nicaragua. So far, other regions that have been more active over the last 24 hours are: Central America, northern Chile, the Fiji Islands region, and the southern Kamchatka peninsula and northern Kuril Islands(Russia).

Update: 7/27/22

4 people were killed and dozens of injuries have occurred following the major earthquake that struck the Luzon region of the Philippines. Over a hundred buildings were damages across the region. The earthquake struck the province of Abra at 8:43 a.m. local time, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometres(6 miles). Landslides and interruptions in power were also reported across Luzon. About 10 cities and 280 towns felt the quake. Several roads were rendered impassable. The quake was even felt in the capital, Manila, but the worst of the shaking was to the North. The Northwestern regions Ilocos and Mountain province were most affected. Churches and historical buildings suffered damage. There still could be more significant earthquake activity going on in the world.

Report: 7/26/22

A major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck 45 km east of Vigan, Province of Ilocos Sur, Philippines, on Wednesday, July 27 at 8:43 a.m. local time. Intense shaking was reported. I'm still waiting for further information. I even searched under hashtag #lindol. So far, I have not heard any reports of damage or injuries yet. Some sources reported it as a magnitude 6.8. The USGS says it was a magnitude 7.1 so far.

Update: 7/25/22

So far, there are increased levels of seismic activity around the globe. A magnitude 5.7 struck Ecuador earlier. So far, I have not heard any reports of damage or injuries coming out of there. It is acting up all over so far. Areas of concern would include: Japan, the Kuril Islands, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Southern Iran, Tonga, Vanuatu, the Samoas, the Kermadec Islands, Myanmar, Pakistan, Northern India, or Western China.. This does not necessarily mean a major earthquake might be imminent. I included Japan on that list. It had a magnitude 7.3 back in March. It means that it may be active. This could also mean a possible moderate or more significant event. Iran has had a lot of activity going on lately as well as Central Asia and the Southwestern Pacific. However, a large earthquake is due somewhere any time or day now.

Delayed Watch: 7/25-8/1/22

It might not be acting up at all right now, but there may likely be more magnitude 6+ any time or day now. It was starting to grow active earlier this week, but then it became very quiet. There is due to be a major earthquake somewhere. Potential candidates could include: Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Indonesia(Sumatra, Sulawesi, Halmahera, or the Banda Sea region), Philippines, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu.. It has been more active across parts of the Middle East and Asia most recently. There is also some more seismic activity heating up across parts of the United States. There is a small flare-up of activity in Southern California and some more seismic activity has occurred in other parts of the west. There has also been some more very small earthquakes in and around Tennessee over the past week again. The latest was a magnitude 1.9 in Eastern TN. The NMSZ was lit up this past week. There could also be more earthquake activity taking place in Alaska anytime now. Something significant cannot be ruled out. There has also been more earthquake activity in the Northern parts of Japan over the last several days as well as the Kuril Islands further up north. It may or may not become very active in the world any time now, but there is a very high potential for a surge in activity within the next week ahead or any day.

Update: 7/22/22

So far, I have not heard any reports of casualties or injuries from yesterday's magnitude 5.9 in Myanmar. The second largest earthquake to have occurred in the world over the past 24 hours was a magnitude 5.5 54 km S of Isangel, Vanuatu which was about 5 hours ago. Earlier, a magnitude 5.2 occurred in Northern Honshu, Japan near the town of Misawa. It had a maximum Shindo rating of 4 in one area. It may not be that active out there right now, but there is still an extremely high potential for magnitude 6 or greater somewhere anytime now within the next 5-7 days. Potential candidates for the next strong earthquake would include: Myanmar, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Halmahera, or the Banda Sea region), Western Turkey, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, possibly Japan and the Kuril Islands..

EQ Watch: 7/21-28/22

I have been very busy today where I could not get around to launching a new watch until just now. I had a feeling it was about to start heating up in the world. A magnitude 5.8 has already struck Myanmar(Burma). There is a very high potential for strong to major earthquake activity in the world within the next 5-7 days or any time now. Regions that may be most active would include: Myanmar, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, or the Sulawesi region), Philippines, Mariana Islands, Taiwan, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji, the Kamchatka Peninsula region, the Aleutian Islands, and possibly Western Turkey... So far, there may be a lot going on anytime now or sometime before the end of this month.

Report: 7/15/22

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Aisen, Chile just over 2 hours ago. However, strong earthquakes have happened a lot in that part of the world so there have been no reports of it making any significant impact to residents nearest to the epicenter. There still may be more significant earthquake activity going on in the world this weekend or early next week. At the same time, it could be over for now. However, it still may be heated and a powerful earthquake somewhere cannot be ruled out. Other parts of the world that may be active would include: Tonga, Vanuatu, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Ecuador, Colombia, Central America. The last magnitude 7 or greater was on May 26.

Report: 7/12/22

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Easter Island region about 2 hours ago. There has been no threat of a tsunami and it happened in a remote part of the world. There still may be more large earthquake activity looming elsewhere in the world. A magnitude 5.2 struck in the Labrador Sea earlier(Newfoundland, Canada region). It was an intraplate event which does not happen very often. There is some more seismic activity warming up in the Western U.S. There may also be more activity going on in Alaska. Other areas in the world that could be candidates for the next strong earthquake may include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea region), Papua New Guinea, the Samoas, Tonga, Vanuatu, Philippines...

Update: 7/12/22

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck 84 km ESE of Port-Vila, Vanuatu late yesterday(U.S. Central Daylight Time). There have been several earthquakes in the mid to upper magnitude 5 range in that region. Lately, I have titled many of these posts as reports with some as updates like this one. Usually, a report is what immediately follows a strong earthquake somewhere and/or if it is a potentially serious and life-threatening situation. Significant earthquakes are common in that part of the world and there is usually no significant damage or loss of life expected unless it is something particularly large. There still might be a lot going on this week or any time now. It has again, been a while since there has been a major surge in global seismic activity.

Update: 7/9/22

Yesterday, 2 magnitude 5.8 earthquakes struck the Mariana Islands. There are still increased levels of seismic activity out there. It might become more active as the day or week ahead progresses. A major earthquake is due somewhere. Regions that may be candidates for the next large quake would include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, or the Banda Sea region), the Andaman Islands region, Papua New Guinea, Japan(Hokkaido), Kuril Islands, Aleutian Islands, Tonga region, Vanuatu... The possibility of an intraplate earthquake somewhere also cannot be ruled out. There was one in southern India and Germany, but they were both below magnitude 5.

New EQ Watch: 7/8-15/22

It has been a while since there has been a major surge in significant earthquake activity worldwide. So far, it may be becoming more active again. It may or may not happen just yet, but the potential for magnitude 6 or 7+ somewhere worldwide may be rising within the week ahead so far. Regions of possible concern would include: the Mariana Islands region, the Andaman Islands region(Port Blair, India region), Indonesia(Sumatra, Banda Sea region), Philippines(Luzon), Japan(Hokkaido or the Ryukyu Islands region), Kuril Islands(Russia), Aleutian Islands(Alaska, U.S.A.), Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, or Western China.. The listed regions are the places that have been more active most recently. So far, the Mariana Islands region is showing signs of becoming more active. There is due to be a major earthquake somewhere this month if not any time or any day now. Although there had been gaps in serious activity that lasted for 2 months, there might be a lot more going on within a week or any time now so far. It may or may not immediately act up yet, but again, a worldwide surge in significant earthquake activity is due.

Update: 7/2/22

There are still moderate levels of seismic activity around the world. A magnitude 5.9 struck north of Hokkaido, Japan nearly 20 hours ago. There is a very high potential for more serious earthquake activity in the world. Japan has been more active again and there still could be more going on in Iran. Indonesia and the Philippines(Luzon), and the southwestern Pacific may also be potential candidates for the next strong earthquake. Meanwhile, some more activity has been flaring up in the Central and Eastern United States again. A magnitude 2.7 occurred near Williamsville, Missouri, not very far from the New Madrid Seismic Zone where a new small magnitude 1.7 was recorded early this morning. There could also be some more seismic activity occurring in parts of the West and Alaska.

Report: 7/1/22

Three deaths and 19 injuries have been reported following a magnitude 6.0 in Southern Iran. The quake hit 100 kilometres(60 miles) southwest of the port city of Bandar Abbas in the Hormozgan Province. There continues to be a high threat for more large earthquakes in the world. Other regions that may be of concern include western China, Taiwan, Japan, Kuril Islands, Philippines(Luzon or the Babuyan Islands region), Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Central America, Colombia..

EQ Watch: 7/1-7/22

The potential for major earthquake activity is on the rise again. There may or may not be a magnitude 7 or greater somewhere in the world, but it is due. June was a relatively quiet month. There were some damaging events out there, but there were no particularly powerful earthquakes anywhere in the world. There were very few significant events out there last month. This month should be much more active. Areas of concern might include: Taiwan, Japan(Ryukyu Islands region), Philippines(Luzon, Babuyan Islands region), Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Central America, Colombia, Peru, Chile... Yesterday, a magnitude 6.0 occurred in the Babuyan Islands region. It was the first magnitude 6 in more than 3 weeks. Though that is not to say that anything below magnitude 6 cannot be deadly. Tragically, a magnitude 5.9 killed about a thousand people just over a week ago. As of right now, there may not be high levels of seismic activity going on worldwide, but it is likely to become increasingly active this weekend and/or next week.
