Report: 11/30/22

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Southern Iran a few hours ago. It had a depth of 15 kilometers. Local news reported that rescue teams were dispatched to the affected area. So far, no casualties have been reported. Overnight(local time), a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the North Island of New Zealand which frightened residents. There was also a magnitude 5.3 in Alberta, Canada. There are still increased levels of moderate earthquake activity worldwide. The potential for a strong earthquake somewhere is still very high.

Update: 11/28/22

So far, there are elevated levels of global seismic activity. The largest that has occurred so far was a magnitude 5.9 just west of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. There is still a high chance of more strong earthquake activity any time now this week. Other potentially heated areas would include: the Kuril Islands region, Mariana Islands, Bonin Islands(Japan), Solomon Islands, Aleutian Islands, Gulf of Alaska, Chile, parts of Central Asia... It may or may not act up immediately, but so far, there may be a lot going on any day now. It may have been recently active, but it still may not be letting up.

EQ Watch: 11/26-12/1/22

It was feeling like it was going to stay generally quiet, but I started getting a sensation that another flare-up of potentially significant earthquake activity worldwide was imminent. There has already been some more moderate activity taking place over the past hour or two. There is a chance it could fall quiet again, but so far there is a high chance of more mag. 6+ in the world anytime now within the week ahead. Regions to monitor would include: the Kuril Islands region, Taiwan, Northern Mariana Islands, Indonesia, Turkey, Italy, the Kermadec Islands region, Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands.. Again, there is a decent chance it could stop, but I'm going to jump the gun and make a post now. There still also very well could be a lot going on again. I'm also starting to watch the Pacific Northwest coast and the Gulf of Alaska region. There may also be more going on up in  Alaska as well.

Outlook: December 2022

So far, it looks like the global seismic activity has finally settled down for now. There is not a lot happening now so far. It could remain generally quiet for the next few days. At the same time, it could get active again somewhere any day now. It could even change today. I'm struggling to process it all today. It feels like the next wave of strong earthquake activity could be within the next few weeks or sooner. There could be a quiet period between now and the middle of December. At this point, it could become very quiet and then become intensely active. The biggest earthquake of the year could be among the next set of significant seismic events in the world. The largest earthquake that has happened this year so far was magnitude 7.6. Usually there is one great earthquake per year(magnitude 8+). However, there are years where a magnitude 8 or greater doesn't happen anywhere and the biggest that happened was magnitude 7.9 or 7.8. There has been some moderate activity flaring up in the Northern Mariana Islands region most recently. Other potential candidates for the next big earthquake would include the Kuril Islands region, central Asia, Italy, Turkey, and Indonesia. Italy is not among the most active places on Earth, but it has been showing signs of becoming more active lately. The next large earthquake could be any day now or within the next 2 weeks. As of right now, the world may be having a break after a spell of frequent large earthquakes. It can suddenly change, but so far, it may remain overall quiet. There are a few places that could have more activity going on, but there may not be anything huge going on yet. I will keep the world posted if something changes. I will be ready to go.

Report: 11/23/22

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck western Turkey injuring at least 50 people. Tremors were strong enough to be felt in Istanbul and the capital Ankara. Estimates of the quake's depth vary from 2-10 km. Power was disrupted in the region and one resident was injured from jumping off of a balcony. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told broadcaster TRT Haber there was no severe damage caused by the quake. Authorities are working to restore power to the area. Turkey's disaster agency said that 37 people were injured in Duzce, one in Instanbul, six in Zonguldak, one in Sakarya on the Black Sea coast, and one in Bolu to the southeast. Photos from Duzce at night showed people huddled outdoors wrapped in blankets and using makeshift fires to keep warm. Meanwhile, the death toll in Indonesia has risen to 268. Many of those killed in Monday's quake in West Java were school children. Safety standards for school buildings are being questioned as army personnel were deployed to aide rescue efforts.

Report: 11/22/22

Hours ago, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands region. Damage has been reported, but there was no tsunami. The earthquake struck offshore at a depth of 15 km(9 miles), about 16 km southwest of Malango. It was initially a magnitude 7.3, but was later revised to 7.0. Numerous aftershocks have occurred. Meanwhile, the death toll in Java, Indonesia has risen to at least 260 from the magnitude 5.6 that struck the area. Over 1,000 people have been injured. There has also been some interesting activity going on in Central Asia. There have been a lot of earthquakes occurring from northwestern China to northern Pakistan and Afghanistan. There continues to be a high potential for a larger earthquake somewhere.

Report: 11/21/22

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck south of Jakarta in Java, Indonesia. It was a moderate earthquake, but unfortunately, that part of Indonesia is apparently more vulnerable to earthquakes. At least 162 deaths have been reported. It was not a very large quake, but it caused significant damage around the area. Some 326 people have been injured. The quake hit the Cianjur region in West Java on Monday at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake has also displaced 13,782 people. At least 2,345 homes have been damaged. Officials are expecting the death toll to rise. This event was also troubling as it was rather devastating for its size. If an earthquake lower than magnitude 6 can cause that much devastation, I can't imagine what a magnitude 7 or bigger would do to those most vulnerable places. There is still a very high potential for more serious earthquake activity in the world. A particularly large earthquake somewhere any time or day now is not out of the question(the biggest earthquake of the year).

EQ Watch: 11/17-23/22

I had a feeling that there would be another flare-up of significant activity not long after the end of the previous world EQ watch. This one is only 3 days, but it could go on longer or I could end up cancelling. There was already another large earthquake out there. A magnitude 6.9 struck some 200 kilometers off the coast of Bengkulu, Indonesia about 3 hours ago. When it comes to global earthquake watches, I will try to post more where they don't necessarily have to be 5 or more days out. It could even be for just one or two days. Anytime I feel remotely anxious about something big happening somewhere, I should jump on it. There may be a chance it could go away, but it is better than not saying anything at all before something serious does end up happening. Regions in particular that I have been watching are central and northern Alaska, the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands, Japan, Central Asia, the southwestern Pacific Ocean, Indonesia, Santa Cruz Islands region, and possibly Iran... There may be something going on in northern Alaska or perhaps the Yukon Territory. There may not necessarily be something particularly serious in or around Japan, but it is a very active part of the world.

Update: 11/16/22

It fell quiet yesterday and it was not very active earlier today either, but some more significant activity took place. A magnitude 5.8 struck the Solomon Islands earlier. A magnitude 5.4 struck western Texas(USA). There was also a magnitude 5.1 off the east coast of northern Honshu, Japan. Today was suppose to be the last day of the world EQ watch, but it still may not be over yet. I might add another day. However, it could become relatively quiet again and the next watch may not be until this weekend or next week. That is not very far off, but it still somehow does not feel complete. There is still the largest earthquake of the year due somewhere. It could be tomorrow, next week, or next month. Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon and Santa Cruz Islands region, Fiji region, Tonga, Central America, Central Asia, and the Kuril Islands region are potential candidates for the next big earthquake.

Report: 11/14/22

Hours ago, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the east coast of central Honshu, Japan. There was no tsunami threat and the earthquake was very deep. It was felt all over the region, but it did not cause any damage or injuries. The Shinkansen bullet trains and Tokyo metro were halted briefly after the quake, but have since resumed. There was also a magnitude 6.1 south of the Fiji Islands. There has been a lot of significant activity going on in the world lately and it still may not be done. There has also been more activity on the rise in central Asia from western China to northern Afghanistan. There is no telling whether the biggest earthquake of the year will be within this watch, but it is due. It also may not happen until next month. It could end up being by the end of the year, but it could also be any day now. The biggest earthquake that has happened this year so far was a magnitude 7.6(there was more than one this year). Typically an earthquake of magnitude 8 or at least a 7.9 or 7.8 occurs somewhere once a year.

Update: 11/13/22

I meant to touch base earlier. There is still a lot going on in the world in terms of seismic activity. A magnitude 6.2 struck offshore of Bio-Bio, Chile last night. It is still active elsewhere. Other areas to watch include: Indonesia, Central America, the Kuril Islands region, the Aleutian Islands, and Central Asia. There could be another major earthquake imminent somewhere at any time or within the next week at this point. There has yet to be a great earthquake. There is typically one magnitude 8.0 or greater somewhere in the world a year. However, there are years that go without one and the biggest that ever happened was a magnitude 7.9 or 7.8.

Report: 11/12/22

A new magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Fiji region earlier. There continue to be very high levels of global seismic activity and it may not be over yet. Other regions that could be under the gun include: Indonesia(Java, Sulawesi, Halmahera, the Banda Sea region), New Guinea, Nepal, Northern India, northern Afghanistan, the Kuril Islands region, Ryukyu Islands region(Japan), Bonin Islands(Japan), Northern Italy, Peru, Chile, the southwestern Pacific Ocean... There has also been seismic activity taking place in the Rockies(western United States).

Report: 11/11/22

A magnitude 7.3 struck the Tonga region three hours ago. The quake was approximately 211 km ESE of Neiafu, Tonga. There was initially a tsunami advisory issued. It has now been cancelled. It had a focal depth of 24.8 km, but this earthquake did not likely cause problems to the affected region. It was far from land and significant earthquakes in that part of the world are quite common. There still may be more to come. On a small scale, a magnitude 3.2 struck the NMSZ at  9:30 last night. It was near the town of Tiptonville in northwestern Tennessee. A couple of new smaller earthquakes have occurred in that area overnight. In terms of the rest of the world is concerned, I still have northern Italy on my list of places to watch more. There has been signs of more taking place there. Other potentially active areas would include parts of central Asia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan(Hokkaido region), the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Peru, Bolivia, Chile..

Report: 11/9/22

There is a lot going on out there. A magnitude 7.0 struck south of the Fiji Islands several hours ago with an aftershock of magnitude 6.6 minutes later. A magnitude 5.6 struck 22 km NE of Marotta, Italy in the Adriatic Sea overnight. It was felt as far away as Rome and northern parts of the country. It occurred shortly after 7 a.m. local time. Fortunately, no injuries or damage have been reported. There happened to be some activity going on in northern Italy, but not in the same area. It is always important to be cautious in case an even bigger event happens later. Once again, it is still very active in the world and there still may be more to come within the coming week or any time now.

Report: 11/8/22

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Nepal earlier. It struck at 1:57 a.m. on Wednesday local time. It was felt in Delhi. Indian sources were reporting it as a magnitude 6.3. There continues to be increased activity throughout the world. The potential for a large earthquake anytime now or sometime within the next week is extremely high so far. Central Asia may be under the gun. There has also been signs of more activity in Northern Italy. Other potentially active regions include Indonesia, the Philippines, Peru, Chile, and the Aleutian Islands. A magnitude 5.0 also struck off the northeast coast of Cuba today.

New EQ Watch: 11/8-16/22

There was a bit of a drag in the activity after it was increasing. However, it could start back up again any time now or within the next several days. I was feeling like these upticks in activity would occur in short intervals. I shortened the last watch to 3 days. I decided to post a new one this evening. It may be around the middle of the month when it becomes most active. There may be a very high chance of a magnitude 7+ any day now somewhere. Today was not a very active day, but there is due to be a lot within the next week so far. Areas to watch would include: the Aleutian Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Kuril Islands(Russia), Ryukyu Islands(Japan), Batan and Babuyan Islands region(Philippines), Indonesia, parts of Central Asia, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Fiji region.. At the same time, it also may not be acting up anywhere just yet. This going drag out for just over a week at this point. There has also been some interesting activity going on in the central U.S. There were not only several new small earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, but some tremors just west of there. The other day, a magnitude 3.2 struck 10 km north of Van Buren, Missouri. There is no way of actually knowing whether this means something bigger might happen soon, but it is worth taking note of. It is not out of the realm of possibility that something could actually be going on in this side of the country. As for the rest of the world, there may or may not be anything significant going on anywhere yet, but there is a high likelihood of it becoming more active somewhere this week.

Report: 11/4/22

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Gulf of California early this morning. It was located 80 km SSW of Bahia de Kino, Mexico. If anyone is concerned as to whether or not this event added stress to the southernmost segment of the San Andreas Fault in California, it should not have. It would take a major rupture on a neighboring section to really increase the risk for a rupture along that segment. It was too far away and not big enough. Of course, this is not to say that there is no risk. There is always a risk where something can change on a dime. Otherwise, the activity in Southern California is still very low. It has not been more active since I left. It has in fact been more quiet than ever since I moved away over a year ago. There may be a lot going on elsewhere in the world so far. More activity has been taking place in Central America, Peru, northern Chile, and Indonesia.

New EQ Watch: 11/2-5/22

I was not sure to launch a new World Earthquake Watch yet, but there is more going on out there so far. A magnitude 6.0 struck in the northern Pacific Ocean. It was hundreds of kilometers off the California coast and it was unusual. It was a rather random location as it was not only away from a plate boundary, but not actually in a known active fault system. There may now be a very high potential for more serious earthquake activity in the world within the next few days so far. A magnitude 6.1 also occurred in the South Sandwich Islands region a few hours ago. Other regions to watch include: Japan(Hokkaido region), Kuril Islands, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile, Taiwan, Philippines, western China, the Hindu Kush Mountains region, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, or Sulawesi region), Solomon Islands, Tonga, Fiji..

Longterm Forecast: November 2022

This may be a very busy month at this point so far. The largest earthquake of the year could even be this month. There may be a lot going on any day now or within the next 2 weeks. I cannot say when it may peak, but it does feel like there could be a lot of serious activity out there this month. The Mediterranean Sea region has been showing signs of becoming more active recently. There was a magnitude 5.5 just off shore of southeastern Italy. It could be towards the middle of the month when there may be the most action or it could be sooner. There is not very much going on out there today, but it can change fairly quickly. Other potentially active areas would include Central America, Peru, Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Aleutian Islands, Japan(Hokkaido), Kuril Islands.. There has also been more activity in the eastern half of the United States recently. There is no telling what is actually in store for this part of the world, but there has been more interesting activity taking place over the past few months.
