Update: 9/30/22

So far, it is becoming more active. A magnitude 5.9 struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia just a little while ago. Yesterday, a magnitude 5.8 struck the Loyalty Islands region. For some reason, I did not see a magnitude 6.5 in the South Sandwich Islands on my feed yesterday morning. It happened overnight and I was busy studying for my Japanese lesson, but I usually am up early enough to find out what happened while I was asleep. It is a good thing it didn't happen somewhere populated. I'm sure I would have seen something if it happened somewhere that could have been dangerous. It might become very active this weekend or early next week so far. There is a very high potential for another large earthquake in the world. Areas to watch would include: Alaska, Kuril Islands or Kamchatka Peninsula, Indonesia, Central America, Ecuador, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji, the Hindu Kush region, Iran, Turkey, and/or parts of the Mediterranean with the possibility of more activity in Italy.. There has also been some more activity occurring in Japan over this past week - not that there is a high threat, but it is a very active region.

EQ Watch: 9/27-10/4/22

There is currently a rise in global seismic activity so far. There is a high potential for more strong earthquakes somewhere any time now or any day within the next 5-7 days so far. However, I will not be so surprised if it becomes quiet and I end up delaying the watch as it has been very active out there recently. There may or may not be a particularly large earthquake at some point during this watch. Regions in the world to watch out for may include: eastern Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, northwestern Iran, Pakistan or Afghanistan, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea region), East Timor, Japan, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji, Central America, Chile.. I'm also not going to forget about northern Italy as there has been some activity going on over there recently. There also may not be anything of concern going on there, but it is better safe than sorry. There has also been a number of earthquakes taking place in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge(Reykjanes Ridge), but it isn't near land. Meanwhile, more seismic activity is flaring up across parts of the United States. A magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred near Yucca Valley in Southern California this morning at 6:02(local time). There is more seismic activity going on throughout California. There has also been more seismic activity taking place in western Texas and Oklahoma. There has also been some more signs of activity in western and eastern TN over the past week as well as a few other states east of Oklahoma. Again, there is a new watch now for more potentially serious earthquake activity taking place somewhere in the world any moment or any day now within the week ahead so far.

Report: 9/23/22

Today was supposed to be the last day of the worldwide earthquake watch, but that does not mean there will not be anymore significant earthquakes going on for a while. It still may not be over yet. There could in fact be a lot going on any time now. A magnitude 6.2 struck off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia just a few hours ago and a magnitude 6.1 struck the coast of southern Chile just less than an hour ago. At the same time, those could have been the last strong events for now. There is still some instability going on out there. There may or may not be another major earthquake imminent somewhere any time now. Other active areas may include other parts of Indonesia such as the Banda, Flores, and Molucca Sea region, Papua New Guinea, Kuril Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Japan, Philippines, and/or Mexico... I'm not saying a major earthquake might hit one of these places. Those are just regions that have been most active. I'm also not going to rule out the possibility of something going on in northern Italy. Again, that may not be a likely candidate, but it is worth a mention in case there is something going on there.

Longterm - 9/23-10/1

So far, it looks like it has finally started quieting down. It has been a very active month so far. At the same time, this break in significant activity may not last very long. There is still due to be an even larger earthquake somewhere. The highest magnitude the world has seen this year so far was a magnitude 7.6. On average, there is one magnitude 8+(or at least mag. 7.8-.9) per year. It could happen as soon as by the end of this month or early October. There is no way to know for sure. It could be even sooner, even tomorrow, or it could be as late as November or even December. At this point, it may be winding back down, but at the same time, it feels like there is still some instability out there. If it is finally becoming quiet for now, the next surge in activity could be around the end of this month or early next month at this point. In the meantime, there could still be some significant activity taking place somewhere, but as of right now, the next set of strong EQs may be a week or more from now. Again, it could still be active somewhere now, but at the same time, there may be a break for it has been relentlessly active over the past 2 weeks. As far as where the next significant event may take place is concerned, Indonesia is often very active and there has been more activity going on there lately. The Babuyan Islands(Philippines), the Southwestern Pacific(Tonga, Vanuatu, Loyalty Islands, Kermadec Islands, Fiji region), New Zealand, the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka Peninsula, and northern Chile would be big candidates for the next large earthquake. There could also be more noticeable activity in Japan. There was a moderate earthquake just off the Chiba Prefecture the other day. I'm not saying anything big is going to happen there. That is an extremely active country, so there is always some risk. There has also been signs of more activity in northern Italy most recently. It is not among the world's most active countries, but it has had a well known history of bad earthquakes. It was even where the Mercalli Intensity Scale came from. I'm not implying something big is likely going to happen there any time now or very soon, but it is possible. I also cannot rule out the possibility of something going on in the Central and Southeastern U.S. In recent months, it has been showing some signs of becoming more active here. There is no surefire way to know something larger is coming up. It is just something to take note and be mindful of. In the meantime, I don't want to neglect covering seismic activity going on back out west. I may no longer live there, but that doesn't mean I forgot about it. There is a flare-up of activity taking place in Southern California. There is a higher chance of mag. 3-4+ any time or day now. There could also be more seismic activity taking place in Northern California and even the Pacific Northwest. There could also be more coming up in Southern Alaska or the Gulf of Alaska or British Columbia.

Report: 9/22/22

A large aftershock of magnitude 6.8 struck Mexico overnight. One death has been reported. A woman fell and hit her head as she stumbled down the stairs in her home as quake alarms sounded and buildings began to shake. There was also a report of a man suffering a fatal heart attack south of the country's capital. Elsewhere around the country, there were no immediate reports of serious damage, authorities said. The aftershock was deeper than the mainshock(20.7 km). The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said that this latest quake does not pose a tsunami threat. Elsewhere around the world, it may still be active somewhere. Earlier, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, just off the Chiba Prefecture. There has also been more activity going on in New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, as well as parts of Iran, Turkey, and potentially the Mediterranean Sea region. Tomorrow is suppose to be the last day of this watch, but I will be keeping the world posted if something else happens.

Report: 9/20/22

As suspected, there continues to be more significant earthquake activity going on in the world. A magnitude 6.0 struck 253 km ESE of Ust' - Kamchatsk Staryy, Russia. That might not be a cause for worry as that is a remote part of the world. The only concern would be the potential for a more powerful earthquake that could potentially generate a tsunami. Earlier, a mag. 5.8 aftershock struck Michoacan, Mexico. Unfortunately, one person was reported dead from yesterday's major earthquake.

Report: 9/19/22

A magnitude 7.6 struck just off the southwestern coast of Mexico at 1:05 p.m.(local time) today. It occurred at a depth of 15.1 km(about 9 miles). The epicenter was located about 23 miles southeast of Aquila. The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami was possible locally along parts of the coastline within 200 miles of the epicenter. There was no threat to the U.S. west coast. According to the Associated Press, there were no immediate reports of damage. Some 643 km east of the epicenter, in Mexico City, buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Coincidentally, Mexico just finished a nationwide earthquake drill an hour before the shaking started, according to the AP. The latest on the previous earthquake in Taiwan reveals that one person was dead while 146 were injured. I'm going to extend this watch for another several days. I had a feeling earlier today that it was far from over. There still could be something else going on. At the same time, there may not be anymore large earthquakes for a while following this. It has been a very active month so far.

Report: 9/18/22

Hours ago, a bigger earthquake struck Taiwan. It was initially measured a magnitude 7.2, but was downgraded to a magnitude 6.9. Tsunami warnings have been issued. Hazardous tsunami waves are possible along coastlines within a 300-km(186 mile) radius. The quake hit the Chishang township in rural southeastern Taiwan and had a depth of 10 km. Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for Miyako island in the east China Sea, but the agency later cancelled the warning. Photos showed collapsed buildings in southern Taiwan following the powerful earthquake. Three people have been reported trapped under rubble, while a fourth person was rescued. About 20 passengers were evacuated after a train derailed in the area, but there were no casualties from the incident according to the Taiwan Railway Administration. Damage was also reported at a local school. Residents have been told to stay alert for aftershocks.

Update: 9/17/22

Images of some significant damage have surfaced. I still have not heard of reports of casualties so far. The earthquake occurred at 3:41 a.m. local time. There are still elevated levels of seismic activity in the world. There is some activity going on off the coast of Japan and the Ryukyu Islands region as well as northern Chile and southern Peru. Taiwan may not be out of the woods yet. That region has been more active recently for a while. There may or may not be another significant earthquake there, but it is always best to exercise precaution in case something else does happen.

Report: 9/17/22

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has struck Taiwan. It occurred nearly 2 hours ago. So far, there have been no immediate reports of casualties. I will provide updates as the day progresses. I apologize for not addressing this immediately. I have been busy all morning where I have not gotten around to my computer until just now. It got quiet over the last 2 days, but late last night, I was noticing a little uptick in the global seismic activity again.

Report: 9/14/22

A magnitude 7.0 has struck the Loyalty Islands. It occurred just two hours ago. There was no risk of a tsunami after the earthquake. There has been more activity going on elsewhere. The largest earthquake next to that was a magnitude 5.8 299 km SSE of Ta `u, American Samoa. There was also a magnitude 5.5 184 km southwest of Merizo Village, Guam. There has been some questionable activity going on in Central America most recently. From Panama to northern Nicaragua, there were several minor to moderate-sized earthquakes over the last 24 hours.

New EQ Watch: 9/13-23/22

I know that there have recently been a lot of strong earthquakes in the world, but it still might not be over at this point. There are increased levels of activity out there and there is a high potential for another strong earthquake somewhere out there any time now this week. Areas to watch would include: Tonga, Fiji, Kermadec Islands region, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Central America, Chile.. Although it looks hot out there now, at the same time, it could end up holding off prompting me to cancel the watch. So far, it still looks like more may be going on this week.

Update: 9/11/22

Four people are reported dead following a major earthquake in Papua New Guinea. The quake happened at 9:46 a.m. local time Sunday. The epicenter was about 66 km(41 miles) east of Kainantu, in the Papua New Guinea highlands. One person was killed in a landslide in the Rai Coast District in the southeastern province of Madang, while 3 others were buried in a landslide in the town of Wau, in the nearby province of Morobe. It was also reported that the regional power grid, internet cables, and highway had been damaged but the airport was still operational. Other people in the region were injured by falling structures or debris, and some health centers, homes, and rural roads were also damaged. The full extent of the damage remains unclear. Jana Pursley, a geophysicist with the USGS(United States Geological Survey), said damage could be moderate to heavy, but no major population centers appeared to be in the path of the temblor's deadliest waves. It still might not be over yet. There could be more significant activity continuing in parts of the world this week. I could end up extending this watch. At the same time, it could settle back down.

New Report: 9/10/22

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake just hit Papua New Guinea. So far, I have no information yet on whether or not there has been damage or injuries reported. There was also a strong earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia less than an hour earlier. There is a lot going on out there and this may not be it so far. That whole region has been very active most recently. There were a couple of strong earthquakes less than 24 hours earlier in the neighboring Indonesian province of Papua. They may not be connected, though.

Report: 9/10/22

Two strong earthquakes rocked Papua, Indonesia hours ago. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries. I looked for further updates and so far, this does not sound like a catastrophic event. Many aftershocks ensued. So far, it still may be heated out there. Meanwhile, more small earthquakes have occurred in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. There have been 7 quakes in the region over the past week, 37 total over the past 30 days.

Update: 9/6/22

So far, there still has been more significant EQ activity going on in the world. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands region overnight followed by a couple of significant aftershocks. This was likely from the magnitude 8.1 sequence from August of last year. I realized that there were 3 magnitude 8+ earthquakes last year. On average, there is usually just one per year. There are even years where we don't have a mag. 8.0 or higher anywhere. So, I don't think we are very behind this year. Of course this does not mean that since there were already 3 mag. 8+ earthquakes last year, then there might not be one for the next 2 years. A magnitude 8 or larger earthquake can certainly still happen somewhere out there this year. It may or may not be this month when the biggest earthquake of the year happens, but so far, Autumn might be the most active time. Sadly, the death toll from the earthquake in China has risen to 66 with 250 injuries.

Report: 9/5/22

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck China's Sichuan Province killing 21 people. It was the strongest to hit the region in 5 years. Some roads and homes near the epicenter were damaged from landslides. Communications were down in at least one area. There was no damage reported at dams and hydropwer stations within 50 km of the epicenter. However, damage to the provincial grid had affected power to 40,000. The epicenter was closest to the town of Luding. It was in the mountains about 226 km from the provincial capital of Chengdu. A resident told that she saw people fleeing their high-rise homes in a panic after receiving earthquake warnings on their phones. People were said to be so frightened that they were in tears. In Luding, the quake was so strong that it was hard for some people to remain standing, while cracks appeared on some houses. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake also occurred in the southern East Pacific Rise, but it was no threat to land. There still may be more significant earthquake activity on the rise this week.

Update: 9/4/22

Earlier, there was a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It occurred in the middle of the ocean, so it did not pose a threat to life and property. It was not a convergent plate boundary event, so there should not have been a significant risk of a tsunami. There has not been very much going on elsewhere, but the potential for another large earthquake somewhere within the week is still very high. There has also been more seismic activity taking place around Japan and the Kuril Islands region. Typhoon Hinnamnor is also impacting the Southern portion of the country. It is expected to cause some life threatening conditions.

Report: 9/2/22

So far, a magnitude 6.1 has occurred in the Papua New Guinea region. It still has not shown up on the USGS realtime earthquake map. There are increasing levels of earthquake activity out there. I apologize for being flighty with my posts. I put a watch out the other day, but deleted it and issued one today. There might be a lot of significant activity going on in the world within the week ahead or next two weeks so far.

EQ Watch: 9/2-10/22

I made changes to the system I use and tried to find a different way to process the potential for global activity. I decided to launch a new watch. It may not be acting up much anywhere yet, but it has been a while since the last major surge in global activity. I need to read up more on earthquake statistics and what is above and below average, but it seems like there is due to be a major surge in activity at least any day now. The biggest earthquake that has happened this year so far was magnitude 7.3. There is a very high chance of mag. 7+ somewhere out there within the next 2 weeks or sooner so far. Now, there is really no consistent pattern. Some years are more or less active than the previous year. There are years that pass without an earthquake of magnitude 8 or above. So, I cannot say we're behind and there should be a lot more going on by now. I have tried doing that before, but it just causes too much confusion and frustration. I should start jotting these events down and paying more attention. As of right now, it may not be active just yet, but it could start any day now. Regions that may be of concern include: the region from Hokkaido through the Kuril Islands, Indonesia or East Timor, Tonga, Fiji, Philippines, the Aegean Sea region, Central Asia(the Hindu Kush region, Pakistan, or Western China)... On a lesser degree, I noticed that there have been more small earthquakes than usual in the Central and Eastern United States over the past month. The New Madrid Seismic Zone has had 37 small earthquakes recorded over the past month. There have been a total of 91 earthquakes on the Eastern half of the continent over the last month. There would usually be just 40-50 on average from what I've observed. Damaging earthquakes are rare on this side of the continent, but they have happened before. As for the rest of the world goes, there may be a lot going on any time now.
