EQ Watch: 8/31-9/6/21

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands hours ago. There is a high potential for more significant activity in the world again within the week ahead. I was contemplating making a post yesterday evening, but was having a hard time getting my bearings and had other things going on. Areas to watch may include: Indonesia(the Banda Sea region), Papua New Guinea, the Andaman Islands region, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Eastern Mediterranean Sea region, Central America, Venezuela, Chile, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji region, Kuril Islands, Aleutian Islands.. There could be more mag. 6+ imminent somewhere in the world any time now within the next 5-7 days. There may or may not be more going on right now, but there is a very high chance for more strong EQ activity somewhere in the world within the week ahead so far.

Update: 8/24/21

A magnitude 6.1 hit the Kuril Islands hours ago. There may be more significant activity going on worldwide. There is still a decent chance of it being active somewhere. The Northern Mariana Islands, Japan, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Iran would be candidates for the next significant event. There was a flare-up of activity in Southern California the other day in the Brawley Seismic Zone. It has started settling down. There has been more activity across the United States. More small quakes have popped up in Western Texas, Utah, Idaho, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Update: 8/23/21

A powerful magnitude 7.0 aftershock struck the South Sandwich Islands yesterday evening or late afternoon. There still is a chance for more mag. 6+ somewhere in the world any time now, but at the same time, that may have been it. Other candidates for the next mag. 6+ would include: the Philippines, Taiwan, the Northern Mariana Islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Myanmar, Iran, Greece or other parts of the Eastern Mediterranean region, Central America, Chile, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula.. There still may be something big going on somewhere out there, but at the same time, it may have just been more aftershocks from the South Sandwich Islands. There could also be more activity going on around North America.

EQ Watch: 8/22-28/21

The activity in the world is increasing again so far. A magnitude 6.8 aftershock struck the South Sandwich Islands last night. More serious activity in the world may be on the rise again any time or day now so far. There has also been more seismic activity occurring in the Central and Eastern U.S. A magnitude 3.9 struck Oklahoma earlier and small EQs have been becoming a little more frequent on the East coast. More small events have also occurred in Western and Eastern TN and surrounding areas over the past week. Again, there is now a high potential for more strong earthquake activity in the world somewhere any time or day now so far.

Outlook: August 2021

It has been a very active week, probably the most active week I have ever seen in terms of large earthquakes. At this point, it may finally be settling down out there. A strong earthquake anytime now is still not out of the question somewhere, though. There may be a very quiet period following all this. It could last a week or it may not last long at all with consistent magnitude 5+ earthquakes throughout parts of the world. While the threat for more strong earthquakes in the world isn't over yet, there could be a pause in significant activity to where the next round of significant activity may not be until the end of this month or early September. Then again, there could be a couple of mag. 6s along the way(not counting aftershocks). The next candidates for significant EQ activity may include Iran, the Ryukyu Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central America, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Kuril Islands, or the Aleutian Islands. There is also some more questionable activity going on in parts of the United States such as Western Texas and even the Central and Eastern U.S.

UPDATE: 8/15/21

The death toll from yesterday's magnitude 7.2 in Haiti continues to rise. Over 300 people have been killed and more than 1,800 were injured. Haiti's prime minister Ariel Henry said that local hospitals, particularly in the city of Les Cayes, were "overwhelmed with wounded, fractured people". An estimated 5,200 buildings were severely damaged or have collapsed. There may still be more significant activity taking place in the world. I might post an outlook later today or tomorrow. Some more seismic activity has occurred in parts of the central and eastern United States.

2nd UPDATE: 8/14/21

A disaster is unfolding in the Caribbean nation of Haiti. So far, 29 people are reported dead and there is widespread damage with collapsed buildings. The Prime Minister has declared a national emergency for a month. Dangerous aftershocks are underway. There may also still be more significant activity occurring elsewhere worldwide. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and residents affected by this deadly event. The country has been recovering for 11 years from that mag. 7.0 which killed several hundred thousand people. It was one of the worst natural disasters the world has ever seen. Tropical Storm Grace is also approaching the region which would significantly exacerbate the situation.

Update: 8/13/21

I have been so overwhelmed lately by all the activity in the world, so I'm sorry I did not post an update yesterday. I do not believe I have seen it this active before in all the years I have been tracking earthquakes around the world. I'm afraid the initial watch post was not urgent enough or I assumed there would not be multiple mag. 7+ events as there was recently a mag. 8+. The USGS updated the sequence in the Falkland Islands, adding a mag. 8.1 where the mag. 7.5 was a foreshock that happened 3 minutes earlier. I'm just waking up and finding out that a major earthquake struck the region of Haiti. It was a magnitude 7.2 and was in the department of Nippes. I was of course overcome with a sense of dread, hoping it is not a repeat of the 2010 disaster. I am still waiting for more news. A strong aftershock in Alaska just occurred this morning as well - magnitude 6.9. My thoughts and prayers are with the people in Haiti. Again, I don't know how bad the situation is yet, but I will keep you all posted.

Update: 8/12/21

It was an even busier day today in terms of large earthquakes in the world. A magnitude 7.5 struck the South Sandwich Islands earlier today. It had a focal depth of 39 miles. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said that there was no tsunami warning after the quake. Numerous aftershocks have been occurring. There still may be more going on out there in the world. I have been cleaning and running errands throughout much of today, so I have not gotten around to making a new post until now. I also deleted the outlook I posted earlier this week. I ended up issuing a new watch the next day and there ended up being two major earthquakes in two days. No major damage was reported from the magnitude 7.1 in the Philippines yesterday.

Update: 8/11/21

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck 63 km east of Pondaguitan, Philippines about an hour ago. A tsunami warning was initially issued. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that damage and aftershocks were expected. The earthquake was at a depth of 65.6 km(40.7 miles). The U.S. National Weather Service said that there was no risk of a tsunami for the west coast from the earthquake. Hawaii Emergency Management said Hawaii faced no tsunami threat either. There still may be more serious activity going on in the world. It fell quiet earlier, but it spiked back up.

EQ Watch: 8/10-15/21

There may now be mag. 6+ occurring somewhere in the world any time or day now. More moderate earthquakes have occurred in parts of the world today and it may be showing signs of becoming more active out there today or this week. Regions to watch may include: the Kuril Islands region, Myanmar, Philippines, Taiwan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, or the Banda Sea), New Zealand, Central America, Tonga, Solomon Islands.. There is a very high potential for a magnitude 6 or greater somewhere out there any time now or within the next 5 days at this point. There is also some more activity occurring across parts of the United States again. There may still be more activity taking place in Idaho, Montana, Western Texas, and possibly parts of the Central and Eastern United States(in the coming days or weeks). Again, there is a very high potential for for strong earthquake activity in the world any time or day now.

Update: 8/5/21

There were some more earthquakes out there in the mid to upper magnitude 5 range over the past 2 days. So far, it may be relatively calm today or for right now. There could still be more going on within the next 2-3 days. At the same time, it could become quiet as it has been active enough over the past week or two. There has been more seismic activity around the United States once again. There is still a high chance of mag. 4+ within 2,000 miles or possible somewhere in the Central or Eastern U.S. There still may be more significant activity taking place somewhere in the world today or this weekend. It may not be over yet. A major quake somewhere is possible. Regions that could be active now would include: Japan(Northern Honshu, Hokkaido, Ryukyu Islands, or Izu Islands), Taiwan, Northern Mariana Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Greece, Turkey, Tonga, New Zealand(North Island), possibly Hawaii.. There may be more volcanic activity going on there any time now. I do not seem to pay attention to Hawaii much at all, but I should start paying more attention to different places that I don't usually cover.

New EQ Watch: 8/2-7/21

I was not sure whether I should put out a new watch or not because it has been extremely active out there this past week. Although there has been some more significant activity taking place in the world, it could also end up settling down for now. Just as precaution, I will make this post and if the threat is gone, I may delete it. There may be something else significant going on in the world anytime now or this week. There has been some activity occurring off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Other regions of possible concern would include: Papua New Guinea, the Northern Mariana Islands, Izu Islands(Japan), Hokkaido(Japan), Kuril Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Kermadec Islands, New Zealand(North Island), Iran, or Pakistan.. There is some more activity taking place throughout parts of the Western U.S. and Texas. There could be more going on and possibly more taking place elsewhere across the country somewhere.
