Outlook: 5.27-6.11.23

There still might be some more significant activity going on somewhere in the world. It has already been active lately. It seems like there might be one more big flare-up of activity in the world before there may finally be a break from major earthquake activity this coming month. It could become active again anytime now or in the beginning of June or it could become very quiet for now and the next surge in global activity could be closer to the middle of the month at this point. There also may not be another magnitude 7 or larger until July. Interestingly, June and July were more quiet times last year after multiple major quakes in May. At the same time, I wouldn't be betting on it. I will be ready to put it out there is something serious arises again. At this point, another magnitude 6 or greater might happen any time or day now, but at the same time, it could stop for now.

Report: 5.26.23

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the east coast of Honshu, Japan. No tsunami warning was issued, according to public broadcaster NHK. It shook buildings in Tokyo as well as surrounding prefectures. There were no immediate reports of serious damage. The epicenter was near Chiba Prefecture, to the east of Tokyo at a depth of 50 km. It could still be active out there. Otherwise, the next watch may be scheduled after the end of this month. It may not be long before the next surge in activity and perhaps there will be a longer break after that.

Report: 5.25.23

I was going to let this watch go out a little bit longer yesterday. An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck the Gulf of Darien, near the Panama-Colombia border Wednesday night followed by an aftershock of 4.9 just ten minutes after the former. There were no reports of casualties or damage. The earthquake did not hit a populous region. According the the USGS, the quake was centered about 41 km(25 miles) northeast of Puerto Obaldia, Panama, while both quakes struck at a depth of 10 km(6.21 miles).

Report: 5.21.23

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Prince Edward Islands in the Indian Ocean and another strong earthquake struck the Solomon Islands less than an hour later. Neither one of them appeared to cause any harm. The first larger earthquake occurred in the middle of an ocean and it was in a divergent boundary, so it could not have caused a tsunami. It is not over so far. It still may be hot again. The Sulawesi region of Indonesia is another area of potential right now. Also the Molucca and Banda Sea regions are potential hot spots at this point. Indonesia is one of the most seismically active places in the world. I'm also still considering Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea region.

Update: 5.20.23

A very large aftershock struck the Loyalty Islands region earlier. Again, there have been no reports of damage or injuries. No destructive tsunami ensued. There have been numerous aftershocks following the latest major earthquake. That may have been it for now. There is still a potential for something significant out there, though. It just may not be a days-long outbreak of significant earthquake activity throughout parts of the world. The other area I am concerned about is the Mediterranean region. There has been some activity occurring in Greece as well as the central Mediterranean Sea region. I've also been concerned about more activity flaring up in Turkey again. At the same time, that also might not happen. By the way, I decided to quit having multiple different images to switch to as profile pictures according to the global seismic activity levels. It not only makes it easier on myself, but it can sometimes get confusing for other people out there. The fact that I struggle to make up my mind on the appearance and would change it so often has not been helpful. I can just keep it with a cute fox theme, but I'm no longer going to use multiple pictures to change in and out of.

Report: 5.19.23

A massive magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands hours ago. It caused a small tsunami in the South Pacific islands. No damage was reported and the threat was over within a few hours. Waves 60 centimeters(2 feet) above tide level were measured off Lenakel, a port town in Vanuatu, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office advised people to evacuate the coastal areas to higher ground. The Office said people should listen to their radios for updates and take other precautions. New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency said it expected coastal areas would experience strong and unusual currents, with predictable surges at the shoreline. The PTWC said small waves of 20 centimeters(8 inches) above tides were measured at North Cape, New Zealand. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was near the Loyalty Islands, a province in the French territory of New Caledonia. The quake had a focal depth of 37 kilometers(23 miles).

EQ Watch: 5.19-26.23

It is probably getting very active again any time now. There could be a very large earthquake due somewhere any time or day now so far. Since it was recently active last week, I made this watch shorter. There could be a sudden, yet brief burst of energy in the world and then it may fall quiet again and may not act up that much for the remainder of the month. There was a magnitude 6.2 in Guatemala yesterday. Fortunately, the earthquake was deep and there were no reports of damage. There still could be more to come for that region. However, the next strong earthquake may very likely hit somewhere else. Other regions to watch include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, or Sulawesi), Papua New Guinea, the Andaman Islands region, Alaska(Aleutian Islands), Kamchatka Peninsula, Kuril Islands, off the coast of Japan, Greece or other parts of the Mediterranean region, Tonga, Solomon Islands.. It was otherwise very quiet this week. It was perfect as I have been reconstructing the system I use. I even debated not using different avatars anymore showing the levels of seismic activity in the world. I simply just cut it to just two forms where it changes color and form at the highest alert level. Otherwise, I gave the original a brighter color scheme instead of just a standard red fox.

Update: 5.11.23

A magnitude 5.5 struck northern California near the town of East Shore. Residents of Sacramento reported feeling it. It struck at 4:19 p.m. local time. So far, there have been no reports of damage. Meanwhile, there has been a lot of activity taking place in and around Japan lately. There still may be more going on in the world over the next several days. Other places to monitor may include Indonesia, western China, Ryukyu Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Solomon Islands, Kermadec Islands, possibly Colombia or the eastern Caribbean... I also have not stopped paying attention to parts of the Mediterranean.

Report: 5.10.23

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Tonga region Wednesday morning. No tsunami watches and warnings were issued. Due to it having a depth of 210 km, it could not have displaced enough water above the surface that would generate a tsunami across the Pacific. There were no immediate reports of damage. The United States Geological Survey estimated a low chance of casualties and damage. It was not so active earlier, but it is of course very active now. Another large earthquake is not out of the question. An even larger earthquake in the same region can't be ruled out although it also might not happen. It still might be active out there within the next several days so far.

EQ Watch: rescheduled 5.9-16.23

I had a feeling that it was going to drag out after that flash of significant activity a few days ago. It now is starting to warm up again. More activity is increasing in parts of the world and there is a very high potential for more strong earthquakes in the coming days. Areas to look out for might include: Indonesia(Sumatra region), Andaman Islands region, Banda Sea, or Timor Leste region, Aleutian Islands(Alaska, U.S.A.), Japan, the Kuril Islands or Kamchatka Peninsula, Solomon Islands, Philippines, Central America.. There may be a lot going on within the week ahead. So far, it is already starting to show signs of growing active out there. A magnitude 7 or greater may be possible somewhere.

EQ Watch: 5.5-8.23

Yesterday, I was planning to post a watch out, but suddenly had to go somewhere and did not come in until 8 p.m. I know that is not exceptionally late, but I was still very tired and had to get up early the next morning. I had too much going on. I went to bed with the promise of making a post the next morning. I had a feeling it was going to become active somewhere anytime now and would wake up and find that something had already happened. I found out that a magnitude 6.2 struck the Ishikawa Prefecture(in western Honshu, Japan). In my time zone, it was the middle of the night, 3 hours after I had gone to bed. So far, there have been reports of damage and some injuries. One person is feared dead after falling off a ladder. A few buildings have collapsed. No tsunami warning was issued. Local firefighters reported that a man went into cardiac arrest after falling off a ladder in Suzu. Two small buildings collapsed in the city, with possibly one person trapped inside. "After swaying heavily sideways, there was a strong jolt in the end. I was terrified." a 63-year-old priest of a Shinto shrine said in a phone interview. He also said two stone lanterns in front of his house collapsed. It had a local Shindo rating in the upper 6 range(the highest being 7). It was rated 4 and 3 in intensity in neighboring Prefectures. Three Hokuriki Shinkansen bullet trains that were operating between Nagano and Kanazawa Stations made emergency stops due to electrical outage, according to East Japan Railway Co. No abnormalities were detected at the Shika nuclear power plant in Ishikawa Prefecture and the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in the nearby Niigata Prefecture, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a press conference. There has been little going on elsewhere throughout the world, but there may be more to come within the next few days. Other regions to watch out for might include: the Aleutian Islands(Alaska, U.S.A.), Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Northern Mariana Islands region, Ryukyu Islands(Japan), Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Kermadec Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, possibly parts of Central Asia including Afghanistan or Pakistan, Iran... It may or may not act up more today, but more strong earthquakes with the possibility of a magnitude 7 or greater somewhere are likely within the next 5 to 7 days so far.
