Update: 12/28/22

A magnitude 6.0 struck 288 km southeast of Isangel, Vanuatu earlier. It had a focal depth of 10 km located in the South New Hebrides Trench between Vanuatu and Fiji. Later, a magnitude 5.6 struck the China-Kyrgyzstan border region. It was 92 km northwest of the city of Asku in China. It was also 10 km deep. I have not seen any reports of problems over there. It does not look like it struck a populous area. It was located in the Tian Shan Mountains. However, the USGS reports got VII on the intensity scale. There still may be a lot going on in the world within the coming days. A major earthquake may be looming somewhere. A magnitude 7.8 or greater somewhere cannot be ruled out. Regions I'm watching closely would be Vanuatu, the Banda Sea region(Indonesia), East Timor, parts of Central Asia such as northern India, western China, Nepal, or Myanmar, northern Ethiopia, the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Japan(Hokkaido, Bonin Islands, possibly Honshu), and the Kuril Islands. Africa is not the likeliest place for a big earthquake, but there has been activity going on in northern Ethiopia(and southern Eritrea). It is a divergent plate boundary, so that is not where the biggest earthquakes would happen. However, there have been large earthquakes recorded in the past in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea.

Delayed: 12/28/22 - 1/4/23

We might be experiencing a gap in large earthquake activity worldwide. There were signs of a lot going on a few days ago, but it discontinued. It is not completely quiet right now, but it overall has not changed at all over the last several days. 2023 may start out busy in terms of global seismic activity. There could be a lot going on by New Year's Eve or day. So far, there has not been an earthquake larger than magnitude 7.6 anywhere in the world this year. It does not surprise me that much as there were two great earthquakes(magnitude 8+) in 2021. December has been a quiet month as November was extremely active. There may or may not be an earthquake of magnitude 7 and above within the week ahead. As much as a lot is due to take place out there by now, this also may not be an intense active episode at the same time. However, I cannot try to look too far ahead to determine when it might be most active. All I can say now is that there may likely be a magnitude 6 or greater somewhere in the world this week. It is of a very high likelihood any day now. Regions that could be candidates for the next strong earthquake would include: the Bonin Islands region(Japan), Taiwan, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, Indonesia(Banda Sea region), East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Kermadec Islands(New Zealand), Chile, or possibly parts of Central Asia.

Update: 12/23/22

There is not much going on out there yet, although there was a magnitude 5.8 overnight. However, it occurred in the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge, far away from any land. It was no threat to human life and property. That is why I have the watch extended to New Year's Eve. Even though there might be a lot going on any day now, it may not start until early next week. This could even extend into the new year. There could even be a massive earthquake due somewhere any time or day now. Areas to look out for may include: Indonesia, Kuril Islands region, Japan(Hokkaido), Myanmar, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Tonga, New Zealand, Argentina, Peru, the Aleutian Islands.. So far, it does not feel like it is going to act up much at all today. That may also change. I stated on Twitter that it could start this weekend or early next week.

New EQ Watch: 12/21-31/22

I'm going to go ahead and place a new watch out there. It is extended for 10 days. It may look sketchy, but there may be a lot going on as we head into the last 2 weeks of the year. There was a strong earthquake in Northern California early this morning. It was a magnitude 6.4 and it caused 2 deaths and 11 injuries. It also causes power outages. The two people who died might have had a heart attack during the earthquake. It is said that it was a result of "medical emergencies occurring during and/or immediately following the earthquake". I could have issued a new watch late last night. It was staying quiet throughout the world, but something did start to feel off. This earthquake occurred during the overnight hours while I was asleep. There was not that much going on elsewhere in the world. Now, there may be a lot going on. There could be a particularly big earthquake any time or day now. Regions to watch out for may include: Indonesia(Sulawesi, Halmahera, or Sumatra), East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Fiji, the Kermadec Islands region, Ryukyu Islands, Izu, Volcano, or Bonin Islands(Japan), Myanmar, possibly Puerto Rico or other parts of the Caribbean, Argentina, or Chile... Northern California may not be out of the woods yet. There may be more to come. A larger earthquake cannot be ruled out. At the same time, it may not likely be the next place to get a major earthquake. It could act up more or it may not just yet. It is somewhat sketchy so that is why I extended the watch that far out. It could flare up with intervals of low activity worldwide throughout the week. It also could end up being intensely active for days. There may also be more activity taking place in other parts of California, including Southern California.

Report: 12/15/22

Yesterday, a magnitude 6.3 struck Alaska's Rat Islands. It had a focal depth of 83.7 km. It of course was not expected to trigger a tsunami. Overnight, a magnitude 5.9 struck 27 km southeast of Hualien City, Taiwan. It had a depth of 15.3 km. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. There still might be a high potential for more significant earthquake activity out there. A much bigger earthquake cannot be ruled out. At the same time, there also may not be a significant surge in activity taking place worldwide yet.

Update: 12/13/22

It was starting to become quiet again earlier, but now it is showing signs of a lot going on in the world again any time now. The largest earthquake so far over the last 24 hours was a magnitude 5.7 93 km South of Naze, Japan(Ryukyu Islands region). Other places that could be active include: eastern Iran, western Turkey, Argentina, the Solomon Islands region, Indonesia(Banda Sea region, Java, or Sumatra), Aleutian Islands, Kuril Islands... So far, it may be getting more active somewhere out there any moment now. A major earthquake may also be imminent somewhere any time or day now.

Report: 12/11/22

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck southwestern Mexico on Sunday causing tremors throughout parts of the capital, Mexico City. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. This must have been an aftershock from that major earthquake that struck the region back in September. There could be more significant earthquake activity on the rise in parts of the world once more. Other potentially active spots would include: Japan, Aleutian Islands, Kuril Islands, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Halmahera), Argentina, Chile, Solomon Islands..

New EQ Watch: 12/9-16/22

It was falling flat earlier this week, but it just now might start becoming very active somewhere in the world any time now. There are more moderate earthquakes on the rise so far. A major earthquake could even be imminent somewhere any time or day now. Regions that could be candidates for the next strong earthquake may include: the Bonin Islands region(Japan), potentially other parts of Japan such as Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands region, Philippines, Indonesia(Sulawesi or Java or Sumatra), Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, western Turkey, or Southern Alaska... I decided to post this now. Although there is a chance it may become quiet again, so far, it might be becoming increasingly active again where there is a higher chance of something big going on somewhere.

Update: 12/8/22

So far, this looks like the end of the watch for now. There may be still a potential for a major earthquake somewhere any day now, but it might be staying relatively quiet until next week. The latest significant earthquake was a magnitude 5.8 in Java, Indonesia. It occurred shortly before I went to bed last night. I have not heard any new reports of damage or casualties from the region. This earthquake had a greater focal depth, so the shaking was not as violent. There have been a few more moderate earthquakes throughout parts of the world. As of right now, it may not be acting up much anywhere for now. At the same time, that can change very fast.

Update: 12/6/22

There has been more moderate levels of activity in the world. A magnitude 5.9 occurred off the coast from eastern Java, Indonesia, 269 km south of Kecong, Indonesia. There is still a very high risk for more serious earthquake activity going on somewhere out there any time now. However, at the same time, we could go through an extended quiet period this coming week. There is still a major earthquake due somewhere whether it be this week, next week, or near the end of the month. It seems somewhat sketchy at this point. Among the regions to watch might include: Indonesia, Philippines, parts of Central Asia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, the Aleutian Islands, the Kuril Islands.. Meanwhile, more earthquakes have popped up across parts of the United States once again. More activity has flared up in Central California and off the Pacific Northwest Coast and Gulf of Alaska region. There has also been some more signs of activity in the Central U.S. east of Oklahoma.

Report: 12/4/22

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Samoa Islands region in the southwestern Pacific Ocean several hours ago. It had a depth of 36 km. A tsunami warning was issued, but there is no threat of a tsunami in the region. There was not much going on in the world earlier, but there is due to be a lot going on once more. An even larger earthquake could be imminent somewhere any time or day now. Other potentially active areas include: Indonesia(Java, Sulawesi, Banda Sea region), Philippines, Northern Mariana Islands, Central America, Kuril Islands...

Update: 12/3/22

There was a magnitude 5.7 in Indonesia a while ago. It struck Java, the same region where a very destructive moderate earthquake killed over 330 people. Fortunately, there were no reports of damage or casualties this time. There may not be that much going on elsewhere yet, but there is due to be more magnitude 6+ any time or day now. Other potentially active regions include: Central America, Colombia, parts of Central Asia, Japan(Hokkaido), the Kuril Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, New Zealand, Fiji region..

New EQ Watch: 12/2-8/22

There is now a very high chance for strong to potentially major earthquake activity going on in the world anytime within the next several days so far. A magnitude 5.7 has struck the Bouvet Island region in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It was beginning to grow quiet, but it is just now showing signs of becoming more active again. A very large earthquake could be imminent somewhere any time or day now. Regions that could be under the gun may include: Indonesia(Sulawesi, Banda Sea region), East Timor, the Kuril Islands region, Alaska(Aleutian Islands), Northern Mariana Islands, New Zealand(North Island), Kermadec Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Santa Cruz Islands region... There have also been concerns of something going on in the Eastern Mediterranean region and Central Asia. There still has been an increase in earthquakes throughout those regions recently. Some more seismic activity has flared up in Southern California. There has also been a little increase in small earthquakes in the Central United States as well as some on the eastern side of the country. There has also been more activity taking place in and off the coast of Japan over the past week. This does not necessarily mean alarm and that there might be something big coming up for those places, but it is worth being mindful of just in case of a significant event.
