New EQ Watch: 1/31-2/6/21

The potential for more strong earthquake activity in the world has increased again. I made a mistake by posting too soon the other day. It felt like there was not going to be anything significant anywhere through the end of the month. There is now a high potential for more large EQ activity in the world any time now or within the week ahead. Regions that could be most active would include: Central America, Chile, Argentina, Aleutian Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Japan, Mariana Islands, Taiwan, Philippines(Mindanao or Luzon), Papua New Guinea, Indonesia(Sulawesi, Banda Sea, Sumatra), East Timor, Loyalty Islands, Tonga region, Kermadec Islands, China(Xizang) or the Tajikistan region, Iran.. There is an extremely high chance a magnitude 6 or greater may occur in the world by the 2nd or 3rd. Of course, it could still become active any time today or tomorrow. At the same time, it may not be very active just yet. There has been more signs of it acting up in Southern California. There have been more frequent micro earthquakes occurring over the last day. There is a very high potential for magnitude 3 or 4+ this week. A lot could even take place out here today. There may also be more activity going on in Central California, the Bay area, and Mammoth. There may also be more going on in other parts of the Western U.S. such as Montana and Idaho.

Update: 1/24/21

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the South Shetland Islands yesterday, but there was no tsunami threat or major damage. There has continued to be a lot of significant earthquake activity taking place around the world. There may still be more significant activity going on out there today and tomorrow. Other regions that could be candidates for the next significant earthquake may include: the Philippines, Japan, Kamchatka Peninsula, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, or the Banda Sea region), China(Xizang, Sichuan, or Yunnan), Central America, Chile... At the same time, it could end up winding down this week. There is a strong chance for more activity increasing in Southern California any time now or this week. This may also include the Searles Valley area as well as the Tehachapi/Grapevine area. There may also be more activity taking place in Central California and the Mammoth Lakes area.

Update: 1/21/21

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred 132 miles SE of Pondaguitan, Philippines on Thursday night local time. Authorities said that the quake was too deep to generate a tsunami. There was also no major damage reported. Again, it was also too deep and far away from land to result in casualties and much damage. There is still a high potential for more significant activity in the world anytime now. At the same time that may be it for now. There may have recently already been a number of significant earthquakes in the world, but that does not mean another strong earthquake can't occur anywhere again today or tomorrow. Then again, it could also hold off until next month at the same time. The next places that could be potential candidates for the next significant earthquakes may include: Central America, Ecuador, the Caribbean Sea region, Peru, Argentina, Chile, the South Sandwich Islands, Fiji, the Kermadec Islands, Balleny Islands, Tonga, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia region, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia(Kepulauan Barat Daya, Banda Sea, Flores Sea, or Sumatra), Andaman Islands, Central Asia(Hindu Kush region), China(Xizang), Iran, Greece, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, Southern coast of Alaska or Gulf of Alaska.. The activity in Southern California is no longer incredibly low. There was a magnitude 3.5 in the Greater Los Angeles area yesterday. There was also a magnitude 3.3 near Searles Valley later on yesterday. There may be more going on today in this region.

Southern California Outlook: 1/19/21

It has been extremely quiet in Southern California today. It may have showed some signs of warming up again, but the number of micro quakes over the last 24 hours has fallen below 20. It could remain like this all throughout the night or by tomorrow morning. At the same time, it could definitely start up again overnight or tomorrow. There may be a lot going on later this week or next week at this point. Again, it could suddenly heat up again tomorrow. A magnitude 3+ could also hit overnight in this region. However, there also may still not be anything going on at all right now. There is still a strong chance of more going on elsewhere in California any time now. There may be a lot going on in Central California anytime now or within this next week. There may also be more going on near Searles Valley and Ridgecrest anytime or day now. I'm going to keep the world updated on what may be going on later this week. Again, there is still a decent chance of the activity flaring up again in Southern California overnight or tomorrow morning. At the same time, I will not be surprised if it is still dead out here in the morning. There should be much more within the coming week. Again, I will make updates with whatever is going on as the week progresses. I may not post in this blog too frequently, but I am on Twitter:

Forecast: 1/19-26/21

There was a magnitude 6.4 in San Juan(province), Argentina last night. So far, no injuries have been reported. There has been some damage which impacted streets and highways in the province. Some homes were damaged. 4 people had to be evacuated from their homes in the town of Zonda. At this point, there still could be some more significant activity going on in the world. However, that also may be it for now. It also may not become dangerously active anywhere for another few days or a week. At the same time, a large quake could still occur somewhere anytime now or later this week. Iran, Afghanistan and/or other parts of Central Asia have been experiencing more activity lately. Indonesia(Sumatra, Sulawesi, the Flores and/or Banda Seas), Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji, the Kermadec Islands are active regions that could also be the next candidates for a large event within the next week or sooner. There also is a strong potential for magnitude 4+ in Alaska(Southern Alaska/coastal areas) this week. It is looking dead again here in Southern California so far. There was some more activity warming up yesterday evening, but then there was nothing for hours. The count is down to only 20 or 21 earthquakes over the past day. If it is going to stay like this all day, then there should be a lot more going on later this week or next week. There is still a decent chance it could suddenly increase today. There has also been more activity occurring elsewhere around the state. There is not only due to be much more taking place here in Southern California within the coming weeks or perhaps days, but also Central California, the Bay area, and parts of the Eastern Sierras. There has been more activity taking place in those mentioned areas recently. At this point, it may or may not act up in Southern California today(mag. 3+). It is still looking unimpressive at this point. It does not mean it will be like this all day, though. At this point, there still may be more significant activity going on in the world today or tomorrow, but at the same time, it could also be winding down for now.

Update: 1/15/21

Yesterday, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in Western Sulawesi yesterday killing 34 people. Several buildings have collapsed and more people have been reported missing. The magnitude 5.7 before that was a foreshock. At this point, there may still be come significant activity going on somewhere, but overall, it could become relatively quiet for now since there has already been a lot of significant activity in the world over the past week. However, it does not mean a major quake might not happen anywhere today or tomorrow. There are still a few places that may be heated such as other parts of Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Greece, Philippines(Luzon or the Batan Islands), Papua New Guinea, or the Solomon Islands region. At the same time, that may be it for now.

Forecast: 1/13-20/2021

There has been a lot of significant activity around the world this week. The biggest was a magnitude 6.8 in the Russia-Mongolia border region. At this point, it could still be active out there in parts. At the same time, it may be winding down for now. It could very well still heat back up again within the next few days. Regions of potential concern may include: Greece, the Philippines(Luzon or the Batan Islands region), Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Fiji region, possibly the Bardados region or other parts of the Caribbean Sea, or Central America.. While there may not be a lot of significant earthquake activity going on right now, there is still a chance it could heat up again within the next 2-3 days or this weekend. I will provide updates as the week progresses.

Second Update: 1/11/21

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck early Tuesday in Northern Mongolia not far from the border of Russia, the USGS reported. The earthquake was 6 miles deep and was located about 20 miles SSW of Turt, U.S. seismologists said. The USGS also said that there was a "low likelihood of casualties and damage" from the quake. "Overall the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist", it added. There has also been other significant quakes elsewhere in the world. 5 hours later, a magnitude 5.9 quake struck off the Western coast of Hokkaido, Japan. There may still be more large earthquake activity going on in the world anytime now. There may also be more activity flaring up in Southern California any time now. It may also be heating up in other parts of California. Alaska may have more earthquake activity going on as well(mag. 4+).

Update: 1/11/21

Over the past 3 days, there has been a lot going on in the world when it comes to earthquake activity. Vanuatu and Chile have had an earthquake of magntiude 6+. There still may be more going on out there with the possibility of a magnitude 7 or greater. However, there may also not be much else going on out there for now. The activity in Southern California has been decreasing where it could become quiet again today. At the same time, there could also be more activity heating up later on. At this point, it is looking underwhelming right now both in terms of significant activity worldwide and more activity increasing here in Southern California. There is a very high chance of more activity taking place in Southern CA this week with a very high chance of a magnitude 4 or greater anytime or day now. It could become very quiet again for now, but it could also spike up again today at the same time. There may also still be more significant EQs on the rise worldwide this week. It may become quiet again for right now, but there still may be a lot going on this week. There is even a chance something big could happen somewhere today.

Southern California Update: 1/10/21

More seismic activity has been taking place here since late last night. It was very quiet all day yesterday. A new swarm occurred in the Salton Sea area with the largest of those quakes being magnitude 3.2. There still may be a lot going on today. A cluster has also occurred in the Inland Empire near Redlands and Moreno Valley. There is a very high potential for magnitude 4 or greater out here this week. Something could even happen today.

Forecast: 1/9-16/21

After a number of significant quakes around the world, it is starting to become less active now. It has not been a very eventful day so far. There is very little activity going on in Southern California right now. It could stay this way all night and even into tomorrow at this point. However, there is still a high chance of it changing anytime now. Right now, there may not be anymore significant activity going on in the world. It may still increase again with the possibility of a magnitude 7 or greater within the next few days. At this point, it may not be acting up that much right now. The regions of potential concern within the next 2 weeks in terms of strong earthquake activity would include: China(Xinjiang region), the Andaman Islands region, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea region, Flores Sea), Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Micronesia, Izu Islands, Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, Japan, Aleutian Islands, Iran, the Caspian Sea region, Turkey, the Azores, Chile, Central America.. At this point, it may be becoming quiet again for now. At the same time, a powerful quake may be imminent somewhere any time now. In Southern California, it has not been very active at all here over the last few days. There should be much more going on this next week. If not, then there may be even more going on 2 weeks from now. There may be more activity heating up in Central and Northern California any time or day now. There may also be more going on up in Alaska and the Yukon Territory.

Outlook for Southern California: 1/8/21

At this point, I don't want to title this as a forecast in terms of seismic activity in Southern California. I'm afraid that would be a bit too bold and I don't want to unwittingly alarm people. Right now, there may be little taking place here for now. There is, however, a decent chance a lot could flare up today or this weekend. It also may not really increase until next week at the same time(mag. 3-4+). At this point, it could be staying quiet for right now/this morning. There is a high chance of a lot more going on by next week if it does not heat up this weekend. It feels like we are slowly getting closer to a more active period for the first time. At the same time, it feels like I have been repeating myself over the past two years. It would start showing signs of becoming a lot more active, but then there would be periods of very little activity where it would feel like there is never going to be a big earthquake out here. There is no way of telling when exactly the day will come. At times, it can feel like it is right around the corner. Other times, it feels like it may not be anytime soon. It has been a pushing and pulling. There is a high chance of mag. 3-4+ today, this weekend, or next week. There is little taking place right now, but there is due to be a lot more going on any day now. I will keep up with whatever is going on via Twitter. I always share the link to my Twitter account at the end of these posts. I will be working today. I will tweet whenever I have the chance if something changes later on.

2nd Update: 1/6/21

More significant activity worldwide has been on the rise. Another strong earthquake(magnitude 6.1) hit Sulawesi, Indonesia earlier. Sumatra has become more active again. A magnitude 5.5 quake occurred along the Southwestern coast, SSW of Bengkulu. There is still a very high potential for more large quakes in the world. I would further watch Indonesia(Sumatra, Sulawesi, Flores and Banda Seas). Also Croatia may not out of the woods yet. Other places of potential concern may include East Timor, Taiwan, Japan(off the coast), Northern Chile, Northwestern Argentina, or Bolivia. There has also been some more activity warming up in Southern California today. There still is a high chance of more going on here anytime now. I will keep up with updates via Twitter:

https://twitter.com/SeismicFox1

Update: 1/6/21

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 jolted the Kermadec Islands region at 6:20:32 GMT on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was about 16 miles deep. There still seems to be little going on elsewhere worldwide at this point. However, it could still become more active out there later on today or tomorrow. There is due to be more large events out there. Regions that may be under the gun would include: Indonesia(Lombok area, the Flores Sea region, Banda Sea, Sulawesi), East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Philippines(Mindanao), Ryukyu Islands(Japan), Taiwan, Japan(Hokkaido or Honshu), Solomon Islands, Tonga, Fiji, China(Xinjiang or Sichuan regions), possibly Southeastern Europe such as Croatia, Italy, or Greece, Chile, or Venezuela.. Those mentioned places would be possible candidates for the next set of significant events. I'm being careful not to make it sound like it will act up everywhere at once. I generally base it on the places that have most recently been more active. There is a very high chance of more strong earthquakes worldwide anytime or day now. At the same time, it may go quiet again today. There is even a major earthquake that may be imminent somewhere anytime now. It seems to have been overall quiet for a while. There may also be more activity heating up in Southern California today. There has been some more activity flaring up over the last several hours so far. There could also be more activity occurring in Central California any time or day now.

Forecast: 1/4-11/21

From now on, instead of posting it as Quake Watch, I should make a forecast of the week. Right now, there is activity heating up in the Salton Sea area in Southern California. It started at around 10 this morning. The largest was a magnitude 4.0 with a foreshock of magnitude 3.1. So far, there have been 4 quakes of magnitude 3 and above. Most of that is part of the Brawley Seismic Zone, located by the Southern shore of the Salton Sea. This area has many events at once with many close in magnitude to the largest quake instead of one large mainshock with much smaller aftershocks. Meanwhile, the overall global earthquake activity has been winding down. It may still act up somewhere today, but at the same time, it could stay relatively quiet for now. There is still due to be a major quake somewhere. It could act up out there significantly within 2-3 days at this point. However, a strong quake occurring today or tomorrow is still of a high potential. Regions that could be candidates for the next large event(s) would include: Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Indonesia(Sulawesi, Flores and Banda Sea region), East Timor, Philippines(Mindanao), Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, Japan, China(Sichuan Province area), Gulf of Alaska, Central America.. I will be continuing to monitor the activity in Southern California. It may be becoming more significantly active out here at least very soon. In terms of large EQs worldwide, it could be very quiet for now. It could be tomorrow or Wednesday whenever it spikes again. At this point, it could get really quiet before it suddenly becomes heavily active. It might be volatile out there. There have been periods where it could be increased, multiple frequent moderate quakes leading up to large events. It could end up staying quiet and one major event occurs in the world. I will be keeping the world posted via Twitter. It can change all the time, but instead of updating the forecast via blog post, I can do that on Twitter. I want to try to limit that and only post an update when there is a big earthquake.

Update: 1/3/21

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Aleutian Islands early this morning. There continues to be more activity increasing in the world. There is a very high chance for more large earthquake activity out there. The Aleutian Islands could still have more going on, but the other potential candidates for the next big earthquake would include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, or Sulawesi, Banda Sea region, Ceram Sea), Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, Japan(Honshu or Hokkaido), Tonga, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Iran, Turkey, Caspian Sea region, Chile.. There has still been very low levels of activity in Southern California South of the Tehachapi Mountains. However, it may be starting to warm up just now. There is a very high chance of magnitude 4+ in the region. There could still also be more taking place in the Ridgecrest area. There has also been seismic activity occurring in other parts of the country. There is a high chance once again for major earthquake activity worldwide any time now or within the week ahead. A particularly large quake could even be imminent somewhere anytime now.

World Quake Watch: Jan. 2-7, 2021

There is now a very high chance of strong to major earthquake activity any time now within the next 5-7 days so far. There may not be a lot taking place out there right now, but it is due to start up any time now somewhere. Regions that may be active include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, or Tanimbar Islands area), East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Philippines(Mindanao or Luzon), Japan, Izu Islands(Japan), Micronesia region, Kuril Islands, Aleutian Islands, Central America, Peru, Chile, the Caspian Sea region, Iran, New Zealand, Tonga region.. There may also be more going on in Southern California any time now. There has not been much going on here, but there has been more taking place elsewhere in the State. This area might be next when it comes to magnitude 4 or greater any time or day now. The Ridgecrest area may also be flaring up again. At this point, there is due to be a large earthquake in the world anytime or day now. It may or may not be today or tomorrow. It is also due to be more active here in Southern California any time or day now.
