Report: 1.28.23

Earlier, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck northwestern Iran, near the border of Turkey. Three deaths have been reported and more than 300 people have been injured. The epicenter was near the city of Khoy. There was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in that same area 10 days earlier. It may not be over just yet. I would keep an eye on that area in case of an even larger event. At the same time, there may not be much else going on in the world after this.

Update: 1.26.23

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands(New Zealand) earlier. There are still heightened levels of activity in the world. Yesterday, there was also a magnitude 5.5 in the Sichuan Province region of China. I have not seen or heard reports of damage or injuries, but it appeared to be alarming to residents. It is a populous area and it must have triggered traumatic memories of the May 2008 earthquake. That was a particularly devastating event. There still could be more going on out there any time now. Other regions to watch may include: Japan(Izu Islands region), the Mediterranean Sea, parts of central Asia(parts of China and/or the Hindu Kush region), Aleutian Islands..

Report: 1.25.23

Hours ago, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the Greek Island of Rhodes, off the southwestern coast of Turkey. It was felt as far away as Cairo, Egypt. No damage or injuries were reported. Even earlier, overnight, a magnitude 4.2 occurred near Los Angeles, California, but was offshore. However, it was felt by many people in the area and people have been going on about it all morning. A magnitude 4.2 is not significant, but at least it made people aware of the potential risk. Noticeable earthquakes do not happen that often in California. It has been very quiet in Southern California over the past 2 years, more quiet than it has ever been before. Of course, just because it has been that quiet lately does not mean something serious cannot happen anytime soon. I'm also not implying that something big might be happening there soon, but there is always a risk of something going off any day now.

Report: 1.24.23

So far, there is much more going on out there today. A magnitude 6.4 struck northern Argentina a short while ago. It was an aftershock from the magnitude 6.8 that jolted the region the other day. It was also very deep - 601 km. I'm watching the Mediterranean Sea again. Another moderate earthquake struck the Malta region. Meanwhile, numerous aftershocks have occurred in Indonesia. There still might be more going on out there any time now or later this week.

New EQ Watch: 1.23-28/23

I'm already having to post a new watch for the world. It may or may not come into fruition, but it still feels like there is some unfinished business out there. Another large earthquake may be imminent somewhere any time or day now. A large earthquake could likely happen this week or next week at this point. Areas in particular that I have been watching are: the Mediterranean Sea, Myanmar, Tajikistan region, Bonin Islands(Japan), and Indonesia. It may or may not be this week at the same time. I may end up cancelling this watch and posting it next week.

Update: 1.21.23

Yesterday, a magnitude 6.8 struck northern Argentina. There was no damage reported. The focus was fairly deep - 610 km. There may not be much else going on out there. There is still a chance of another strong earthquake in the world, but the watch ended. There still may be a very large earthquake due somewhere any day now, but it may also hold off for a while. As much as it may be over for now, it also may not be. I will not be surprised if I have to put another watch out next week or even tomorrow or later this evening. It still feels unstable. There could possibly be something going on closer to my area. There may have not been any new earthquakes reported from areas such as the New Madrid Seismic Zone or anywhere east of Oklahoma, but it overall has shown signs of becoming a little more active on this side of the continent.

Update: 1.20.23

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck near Guadeloupe Island in the Caribbean earlier. No damage was reported, but it was felt as far away as Puerto Rico. There still may be more going on out there. This would be the last day of the world earthquake watch, but nothing is set in stone. It has been an active week. There have been 3 magnitude 7+ earthquakes this month so far. I was at first uncertain about the outlook for January, but I knew more major earthquake activity was due after it being quiet for a while. This does not necessarily mean that February will be quiet.

Report: 1.18.23

An earthquake measuring magnitude 7.0 struck 154 km NW of Tobelo, Indonesia just hours ago. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the northern Molucca Sea with a depth of 48 kilometres. A tsunami warning was issued, but later cancelled. Although it caused panic to nearby residents, there were no reports of serious damage or injuries. Just less than 6 hours earlier, a magnitude 6.0 struck eastern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Again, there haven't been reports of damage or injuries. There was also a magnitude 5.8 in the Turkey-Iran border region almost 2 hours ago. The epicenter was near the Iranian town of Khoy. So far, no injuries have been reported yet.

Update: 1.16.23

There continues to be a lot of activity going on worldwide. A magnitude 6.3 struck the Bonin Islands(Japan) region earlier. There has not been anything that caused harm so far, but there is still a high threat for more large earthquake activity this week so far. Places to watch so far include: Central America, southern Peru, Bolivia, northwestern Argentina, Japan(Hokkaido, Bonin Islands, Izu Islands, Ryukyu Islands), Indonesia, parts of Central Asia, the Aegean Sea, southeastern Europe(Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovinia), Vanuatu..

Report: 1.15-16.23

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake just struck the Nias region(northern Sumatra) of Indonesia a short while ago. The quake was at a depth of 80 km(49 miles). So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries. This earthquake was also offshore. There has been an increase in moderate earthquake activity in the world all day today. There is still a very high potential for more significant earthquakes out there. Other potentially active regions to watch include: other parts of Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Vanuatu region, El Salvador, Kuril Islands, Aleutian Islands...

New EQ Watch: 1.14-20.23

There may have recently been a lot of significant activity over the past week, but there now may be more to come. There is now an extremely high potential for another large earthquake in the world somewhere. There may be a lot going on this week if not any time now. I'm becoming particularly concerned about a massive earthquake being imminent somewhere. I'm talking about a magnitude 8+. So far, it feels like it could be any time or day now or within the next several weeks. Regions to watch include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Tanimbar Islands, Sulawesi), Timor Leste(East Timor), New Guinea, Papua New Guinea(New Britain), Vanuatu, Northern Mariana Islands, Japan, Alaska, U.S.A.(Aleutian Islands or Southern Alaska), Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Chile. There may not necessarily be anything too big that is imminent any day now, but there is a strong chance so far for more magnitude 6+ worldwide again.

Update: 1/11/23

Numerous aftershocks are occurring in both recently impacted places. A significant aftershock measuring magnitude 5.8 struck the region of Vanuatu. Meanwhile, many aftershocks are occurring in the Banda Sea region. At this point, there may not be a whole lot going on now elsewhere, but there is still a high potential for more significant activity this week. Meanwhile, some more small earthquakes have occurred in the Central and Eastern U.S. this week. There is a chance a more significant or moderate event could occur in this part of the country. It is rare, but that does not mean a more widely felt event is impossible. Over the past year, there has been an increase in seismic activity, including where the New Madrid Seismic Zone is.

Update: 1/10/23

An update on yesterday's powerful earthquake: 2 school buildings and 15 houses were damaged in the Tanimbar Islands, with one of the homes being heavily damaged and 3 others moderately damaged. Only one injured student was reported. "Local residents felt strong tremors for 3-5 seconds. There was panic when the quake shook so that residents left their houses," Abdul Muhari, said in a statement, citing the local agency. The earthquake again, was located in the Banda Sea. Regions closest to the epicenter were the Tanimbar Islands in the Maluku Province which has a population of about 127,000. The earthquake was felt in several regions, including Papua and East Nusa Tenggara Provinces, as well as northern Australia. It may not be over yet. There still could be more significant earthquake activity going on in the world this week. Other places to watch next might include: Indonesia(same area as well as Java), Myanmar, Afghanistan, Tajikistan region, the Aegean Sea region, Vanuatu, and the Santa Cruz Islands.

Report: 1/9/23

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Kepulauan Tanimbar region of Indonesia an hour ago. The shaking was felt as far away as Australia. A tsunami warning was issued, but later canceled. The earthquake struck at 2:47 a.m. local time on Tuesday and was centered in the Banda Sea, about 85 kilometers north of Babar Island. It had a focal depth of about 95 km. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties. Residents in the Australian city of Darwin, which is more than 600 km from the epicenter, also felt the earthquake. Indonesia is one of the regions belonging to the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of faults circling the Pacific Basin which is prone to frequent and large earthquakes.

Report: 1/8/23

A magnitude 7.0 struck near Port-Olry, Vanuatu a short while ago. A tsunami warning was issued by The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for areas within 186 km(300 miles) within the epicenter. The earthquake struck at 11:52 p.m. local time. No initial reports of damage or injuries occurred. It may still be active out there. An even larger earthquake somewhere cannot be ruled out. At the same time, that may also be it for now, but there may be more going on later this week. A magnitude 7.0 is too weak to cause significant widespread tsunami waves. One of these days, there will be a massive earthquake that will result in a big tsunami event(that is if it were to occur underneath the ocean). If you live in a coastal area and your region is issued a tsunami warning, don't go to the beach or a harbor to wait and watch for the waves to arrive. Following the magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Japan in 2011, someone was killed in Crescent City, California from tsunami waves. It was likely due to their curiosity. Please do not be a repeat of that tragedy. Move to higher ground and away from the coast until officials announce when it is safe to return to where you were.

EQ Watch: 1/6-14/23

I'm just going to go ahead and post this. I have been unsure as it has been showing signs of acting up, but then falling quiet again and it has been going on for a while. There have been a couple of significant earthquakes over the past 24 hours while not much else was going on in the world. There is a very high chance of a major earthquake somewhere any time or day now. It may or may not be heavily active yet, but there is due to be a large earthquake out there. It has been quiet for a while. Regions to be watching include: the southwestern Pacific Ocean(from the Solomon Islands to Vanuatu, Tonga, and Fiji), New Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Philippines(Mindanao), Japan(Honshu, Hokkaido, Ryukyu Islands), Kuril Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Central Asia(Northern India to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), and Chile.. I apologize for being flighty on these posts lately. I will not cancel again after this. I extended the watch to the 14th. There should be more going on by then. It may or may not immediately be active just yet, but there is an extremely high chance of magnitude 6 or greater by next week.

https://twitter.com/SeismicFox1

Outlook: January 2023

With the exception of one or two significant earthquakes, it feels like we are in a seismic gap. There was a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in northern Afghanistan yesterday, but that was very much it. There is currently very little going on out there otherwise. It can change very quickly, but as of now, I'm taking away the World EQ Watch again. This does not mean no strong earthquakes anywhere at all. It just does not feel like a major outbreak is about to take place just yet. I still may issue a new watch today or this weekend. It is not easy as much as something big might still happen somewhere. It has been quiet for a long time. It could become active again this weekend or early next week or it may not be until the middle or latter part of the month. Lately, it has shown some signs of heavy activity breaking out in the world, but then it would go back to there being very little going on. I felt prompted to make a new post yesterday because there was a magnitude 5.9 somewhere, but there was little going on elsewhere. I would save those posts for whenever a surge in global activity was imminent, but not for rogue strong earthquakes while the rest of the world is not acting up much at all. November was a very active month. There were multiple major earthquakes occurring in that period of time, so there has been a break going on over the past month. However, there may just as much be a lot due any time now. At this point, January may not be that active. A magnitude 7 or higher is definitely not a no, but February may be more active. That can very well change, but at this point, it still looks underwhelming out there. There is however, a high likelihood of magnitude 6 or greater next week. It could start as soon as this weekend or even today. At the same time, I will not be so surprised if it is still the same by early next week. It is frustrating with how I keep having to go back and forth on whether or not to put a watch out. I want to avoid causing confusion or a boy-who-cried-wolf effect. It is not an easy situation when it is like this. The rule of thumb is to always be prepared whether or not it looks particularly active out there, especially if you are in an earthquake-prone region. There is always a chance of something big happening somewhere.

Update: 1/2/23

There was a lull in activity over the past few days. However, it is picking back up again so far. There is now a very high potential for a major earthquake somewhere in the world any time now or sometime this week. Regions that might be under the gun may include: the Kuril Islands region, Japan(Hokkaido, Honshu) - There has been a number of earthquakes taking place around Japan, however, that does not necessarily mean a large earthquake might happen there, parts of Central Asia, Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, or Banda Sea region), Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu... It has been quiet around the world for a while. There should be a lot going on out there by now or within the next 5-7 days.
