Report: 1/8/23

A magnitude 7.0 struck near Port-Olry, Vanuatu a short while ago. A tsunami warning was issued by The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for areas within 186 km(300 miles) within the epicenter. The earthquake struck at 11:52 p.m. local time. No initial reports of damage or injuries occurred. It may still be active out there. An even larger earthquake somewhere cannot be ruled out. At the same time, that may also be it for now, but there may be more going on later this week. A magnitude 7.0 is too weak to cause significant widespread tsunami waves. One of these days, there will be a massive earthquake that will result in a big tsunami event(that is if it were to occur underneath the ocean). If you live in a coastal area and your region is issued a tsunami warning, don't go to the beach or a harbor to wait and watch for the waves to arrive. Following the magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Japan in 2011, someone was killed in Crescent City, California from tsunami waves. It was likely due to their curiosity. Please do not be a repeat of that tragedy. Move to higher ground and away from the coast until officials announce when it is safe to return to where you were.
