A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Kepulauan Tanimbar region of Indonesia an hour ago. The shaking was felt as far away as Australia. A tsunami warning was issued, but later canceled. The earthquake struck at 2:47 a.m. local time on Tuesday and was centered in the Banda Sea, about 85 kilometers north of Babar Island. It had a focal depth of about 95 km. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties. Residents in the Australian city of Darwin, which is more than 600 km from the epicenter, also felt the earthquake. Indonesia is one of the regions belonging to the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of faults circling the Pacific Basin which is prone to frequent and large earthquakes.
