EQ Watch: 7/1-7/22

The potential for major earthquake activity is on the rise again. There may or may not be a magnitude 7 or greater somewhere in the world, but it is due. June was a relatively quiet month. There were some damaging events out there, but there were no particularly powerful earthquakes anywhere in the world. There were very few significant events out there last month. This month should be much more active. Areas of concern might include: Taiwan, Japan(Ryukyu Islands region), Philippines(Luzon, Babuyan Islands region), Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Central America, Colombia, Peru, Chile... Yesterday, a magnitude 6.0 occurred in the Babuyan Islands region. It was the first magnitude 6 in more than 3 weeks. Though that is not to say that anything below magnitude 6 cannot be deadly. Tragically, a magnitude 5.9 killed about a thousand people just over a week ago. As of right now, there may not be high levels of seismic activity going on worldwide, but it is likely to become increasingly active this weekend and/or next week.
