Report: 10/5/22

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred 14 km east of Sullana, Piura, Peru, on Wednesday, October 5th at 3:26 a.m. local time. According to the preliminary data, the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km. This earthquake should have been widely felt by anyone close to its epicenter. It may have caused light to moderate damage. I have not received further information on this event confirming that there has been damage or injuries. Earlier, a magnitude 5.6 struck northwestern Iran. Over 500 people were injured and hundreds of houses were damaged. The earthquake had a depth of 10 km in the West Azerbaijan province. 528 people were injured, 135 of whom were admitted to the hospital. This part of the world is active, but vulnerable to earthquakes. This was not even a strong earthquake and it has caused some serious problems along with another one of about the same size just months ago. The deadliest earthquake to strike Iran was a magnitude 7.4 in 1990 that killed 40,000 people and injured 300,000 others, and left half a million homeless. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 quake in southeastern Iran leveled the ancient mud brick city of Bam and killed at least 31,000 people. There may not be a whole lot going on elsewhere throughout the world right now, but there is a very high potential for magnitude 6+ within the week ahead.
