A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck just off the east coast of Taiwan. There were no immediate reports of damage. The quake briefly shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. It had a focal depth of 17.9 km(11.1 miles), and could be felt in the northern, central, and eastern parts of the island. This is likely an aftershock from last month's large sequence. There are heightened levels of seismic activity in the world so far. A magnitude 5.5 struck the Fiji region earlier. There is a very high potential for more serious earthquake activity worldwide this week.
