A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan just hours ago. Buildings shook briefly in Taipei, but there were no reports of damage. The quake had a depth of 27.5 km(17.1 miles) with its epicenter 89.5 km(55.6 miles) off Taiwan's east coast. It was located roughly between the coast of Hualien county and the southern Japanese island of Yonaguni. The quake could be felt across Taiwan. Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, so it is prone to earthquakes. There continues to be high levels of activity in the world. There could even be a larger earthquake any day now somewhere. Other potential candidates for the next strong earthquake would include: the Andaman Islands region, East Timor, the Molucca Sea region, Japan, Southern Greece, Eastern Turkey, New Caledonia region, Tonga.. Meanwhile, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck South Carolina overnight. It was centered near the town of Elgin at around 1:30 a.m.(EDT). Several quakes have been recorded in that area over the past several months.
