A powerful earthquake has just struck south central Turkey. It was a magnitude 7.8 with a focal depth of 24 km. It was centered east of the town of Duzici, south of Maras. I expect there to be a lot of significant damage and many casualties are likely. As much as I hate to say that, Turkey's buildings are more vulnerable to earthquakes and the earthquake struck near population centers. So far, it looks like severe shaking has been reported out of the region. According to the US Geological Survey website, a red pager alert has just been registered. I will follow up with more reports tomorrow morning. Sadly, I am very sure that it is going to be a very bad situation.
