A magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred just off the coast of Northern Chile late last night. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage and no tsunami alert was issued. The quake occurred at 12:09 A.M. local time at a depth of 22 miles. A magnitude 6.3 aftershock occurred a few minutes later. There were several more significant aftershocks following the event. The quake was felt as far as the nation's capital of Santiago as well as in Antofagasta which was 826 miles further to the North. There was video footage of windows rattling and objects falling to the ground. Local radio stations reported that boulders have broken off hills. The electricity was also briefly cut off. Earlier yesterday, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in the Chagos Archipelago region(Indian Ocean). The previous day, another strong earthquake(mag. 6.5) occurred in at another divergent plate boundary in the Central Atlantic Ocean. There may continue to be more significant earthquake activity firing up in the world anytime or day now. There may be more seismic activity heating back up again in Southern California anytime now. It may have stopped overnight, but there is still a very high potential for more going on here. There is also a high potential for mag. 3+ in Central and/or Northern California and other parts of the Western U.S. anytime or day now so far.
