EQ WATCH: Aug. 31 - Sept. 8, 2020

 

There is now a strong chance of more mag. 6+ worldwide anytime or day now within the next week. It may or may not act up today, but within the week ahead, more large earthquakes are likely. Regions to watch out for would include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, the Banda Sea region), New Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands region, Tonga, Vanuatu, New Zealand(North Island), Balleny Islands region, Myanmar, Afghanistan or Pakistan, Iran, Greece, Northern Mariana Islands, Japan, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Peru, Chile, Central America.. At the same time, it may be a couple of more days before more significant earthquake activity takes place in the world. There is a very high chance more serious activity could take place any time now or sometime within the next 5-7 days. There may also be more activity increasing once more in Southern California as well as other parts of the state.

Aug. 28-29, 2020

It has been rather quiet in the world in terms of significant earthquake activity. It could remain quiet all weekend at this point. However, it could still jump back up any time now somewhere. There may likely be another round of strong earthquakes by September 6-8. While it is remaining relatively low in activity in the world, there is that potential for something serious taking place somewhere. A magnitude 7+ quake somewhere before this month is over is not out of the realm of possibility at this point. I have drawn my attention more towards the Mediterranean Sea region and Central Asia(Pakistan or Afghanistan region). However, there still may not be much going on out there for now. There has been very little going on in Southern California today. I did a 180 just minutes ago and issued an alert, but took it back after discovering that the mag. 5.1 in the Greece/Albania region has been downgraded to mag. 4.5. I'm being very cautious at this point. The activity in Southern California could rise again anytime now or by tomorrow. At the same time, it could remain low all weekend.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the West coast of Costa Rica on Monday. There were no initial reports of damage. The quake hit at a depth of 17 miles, close to the city of Jaco, according to the USGS. It was reported that the earthquake rattled buildings in the capital of San Jose which was about 41 miles away from the epicenter. There still may be more significant earthquake activity occurring in the world anytime today or this week. However, it may become very quiet for now. There may also be more seismic activity increasing in Southern California as well as other parts of California today or later this week.

Outlook: August 2020

Usually in the latter part of every month, I make a post detailing the potential outlook in terms of earthquakes worldwide and local. Yesterday, I made a post, but deleted it because I rushed through it and did not thoroughly process everything. At this point, more significant activity may start heating up by tomorrow in parts. There could also be little going on out there for now. There is still a high change for more mag. 6+ worldwide within the week ahead. Areas to watch include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea region), Mohean-India region(Andaman Islands), Central Asia(Hindu Kush region or Xizang-China), East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Aleutian Islands and/or Southern Alaska... It has been extremely quiet all day in Southern California. The number of quakes over the last day has dropped all the way down to 19(area between the Tehachapi Mountains and the Mexico border). There has been some more activity heating up in Baja California, just South of the border. At this point, it could remain very quiet for the rest of the day or possibly into tomorrow. However, a lot more could take place any day now. More mag. 4+ within the next week or two is of a very high chance. There could also be more taking place with the Ridgecrest sequence. There may be more mag. 3+ in other parts of California and/or Nevada anytime or day now. I will be providing updates via Twitter if more changes occur.

Update: August 19, 2020

Yesterday, a pair of large earthquakes occurred off the coast of Southern Sumatra, Indonesia. They were of mag. 6.8 and mag. 6.9(the 6.8 being the foreshock). There were no reports of a tsunami and no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. The magnitude 6.8 occurred 80 miles off the coast of Sumatra at 5:23 A.M. local time. The magnitude 6.9 occurred in the same location only 6 minutes later. Frightened residents fled from their homes and into the streets in the city of Bengkulu, closest to the epicenter. After those events there has not been much else going on in the world. That may or may not be it for now. There is more activity rising here in Southern California again so far. There has also been  more activity heating up in  other parts of the state. I usually share the link to my Twitter account to provide updates for if and when more changes.

Update: August 18, 2020

A magnitude 6.6 occurred in the Samar Sea of the Philippines yesterday. At least one person has died and dozens of others have been injured. The quake damaged numerous homes, bridges, and buildings, including 2 coronavirus quarantine centers. The victim was a retired police officer. His death was a result of getting pinned under the debris of a three-story house that collapsed in the coastal town of Cataingan according to authorities. Rescuers were trying to find members of his family who were still missing late Tuesday. The earthquake hit just after midnight local time. It was centered around 3 miles from Cataingan with a focal depth of 13 miles. More than 40 people were said to be injured and about 100 others who were undergoing coronavirus quarantine were forced to evacuate two damaged government buildings, officials said. There has not been much else going on elsewhere in the world. However, there is still a high potential for more significant activity somewhere. At the same time, there may be hardly anything else going on out there for now. Other places of possible concern include: Bonin Islands(Japan), Indonesia(Java, Banda Sea, Flores Sea, or Molucca Sea), Central Asia(Hindu Kush region, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Xizang-China), Aleutian Islands(Alaska), Central America, Greece or the Eastern Mediterranean region, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Kermadec Islands, Chile, Peru.. There has been some steady burning activity in Southern California so far. More magnitude 3+ anytime within the next several days might be on the rise. There may also be more going on in other parts of California.

August 16-22, 2020

 

Some more signs of significant earthquake activity occurred later yesterday, but there has still not been much else going on after that. It may or may not act up today. However, the chances of more strong earthquakes in the world have risen again. Within the next 5-7 days, a magnitude 6 or greater is likely somewhere. It could happen today or it may be another day or two before more significant activity occurs in the world. Regions to look out for include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Java, Banda Sea, or Molucca Sea region), Philippines(Mindanao or the Batan and Babuyan Islands region), Central Asia(Tajikistan, Hindu Kush region, Pakistan, or Xizang-China), Argentina, Chile, Peru, Tonga, Kermadec Islands region, The Eastern Mediterranean(Greece or Turkey), Aleutian Islands or Southern Alaska.. More started heating up again with the Ridgecrest Sequence last night and this morning. Some more activity has occurred in the area South of that late last night as well. There may be more to come within the coming days.
