Update: 9/4/22

 

Earlier, there was a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It occurred in the middle of the ocean, so it did not pose a threat to life and property. It was not a convergent plate boundary event, so there should not have been a significant risk of a tsunami. There has not been very much going on elsewhere, but the potential for another large earthquake somewhere within the week is still very high. There has also been more seismic activity taking place around Japan and the Kuril Islands region. Typhoon Hinnamnor is also impacting the Southern portion of the country. It is expected to cause some life threatening conditions.

So far, a magnitude 6.1 has occurred in the Papua New Guinea region. It still has not shown up on the USGS realtime earthquake map. There are increasing levels of earthquake activity out there. I apologize for being flighty with my posts. I put a watch out the other day, but deleted it and issued one today. There might be a lot of significant activity going on in the world within the week ahead or next two weeks so far. 

EQ Watch: 9/2-10/22

 

I made changes to the system I use and tried to find a different way to process the potential for global activity. I decided to launch a new watch. It may not be acting up much anywhere yet, but it has been a while since the last major surge in global activity. I need to read up more on earthquake statistics and what is above and below average, but it seems like there is due to be a major surge in activity at least any day now. The biggest earthquake that has happened this year so far was magnitude 7.3. There is a very high chance of mag. 7+ somewhere out there within the next 2 weeks or sooner so far. Now, there is really no consistent pattern. Some years are more or less active than the previous year. There are years that pass without an earthquake of magnitude 8 or above. So, I cannot say we're behind and there should be a lot more going on by now. I have tried doing that before, but it just causes too much confusion and frustration. I should start jotting these events down and paying more attention. As of right now, it may not be active just yet, but it could start any day now. Regions that may be of concern include: the region from Hokkaido through the Kuril Islands, Indonesia or East Timor, Tonga, Fiji, Philippines, the Aegean Sea region, Central Asia(the Hindu Kush region, Pakistan, or Western China)... On a lesser degree, I noticed that there have been more small earthquakes than usual in the Central and Eastern United States over the past month. The New Madrid Seismic Zone has had 37 small earthquakes recorded over the past month. There have been a total of 91 earthquakes on the Eastern half of the continent over the last month. There would usually be just 40-50 on average from what I've observed. Damaging earthquakes are rare on this side of the continent, but they have happened before. As for the rest of the world goes, there may be a lot going on any time now.

Update: 8/30/22

 

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred in the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge hours ago. It posed no danger as it occurred in the ocean in a remote part of the world. It also occurred in a divergent zone and it is the convergent plate boundaries where the largest, most dangerous tsunami-genic earthquakes occur. There still may be a lot going on within the days to come. It may or may not be seriously active anymore today, but there still is a high potential for more strong earthquake activity somewhere within this week so far.

Update: 8/29/22

 

So far, there has been a lot of activity in the world since yesterday. The largest one so far was a magnitude 5.9 off the coast of Sumatra(Indonesia). I have not seen any reports of fatalities, injuries, or damage anywhere. There continues to be elevated levels of global seismic activity. There is a very high chance of a large earthquake somewhere any time now or sometime this week so far. Regions of interest include: Japan(Ryukyu Islands, Honshu, Hokkaido), Kuril Islands(Russia) Philippines, Molucca Sea region(Indonesia), Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji, parts of Central Asia..

EQ Watch: 8/28-9/5/22

 

There is absolutely nothing going on anywhere right now. It has been very uneventful over the past 2 days. I posted a watch starting on the 26th, but decided to delay it to the very end of the month and first week of September. This doesn't mean that it will stay quiet all day today and tomorrow. At this point, the most of it might be either during the last few days of this month or during the first week of September. At the same time, I will not be too surprised if it remains quiet for a long time. However, it should not be much longer before the next magnitude 6 or greater in the world. Areas I have been watching include: Indonesia(Sumatra, Molucca Sea, and Banda Sea region), Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, Japan(Kyushu, Honshu, or Hokkaido), the Kuril Islands region, Kamchatka Peninsula, western China, Myanmar, Afghanistan or Pakistan, eastern Iran, western Turkey, Central America, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji region... At this point, it feels like the heaviest of activity will be either by the end of this month or first week in September once again. However, that does not mean there will be nothing going on until then.

Longterm Forecast: 8/18-31/22

 

For now, it looks like the global seismic activity is settling down. While there may still be a chance of it suddenly flaring back up again, it could remain relatively quiet for the rest of the following week. The next wave of significant activity in the world may be towards the end of this month. In the meantime, it may not be totally uneventful. There may be intervals of a few significant earthquakes leading up to the end of this month/beginning of next month. At this point, that may be what is ahead. There may or may not be a particularly large earthquake around the end of August or in early September. There is no telling how big an earthquake will be. At the same time, I may end up springing back into action this weekend or next week with a new watch. There is no guaranteed date as to when the next surge in global activity will be, but at this point, it might be quiet for now.
